Saturday classic - Bronski Beat

Viime viikonloppuna Netflixistä katsomamme mainio The Prom toi mieleen valinnan tämän kertaiseksi lauantaiklassikoksi. Tuossa musikaalissa Broadway-tähdet puolustavat indianalaisen tytön oikeutta mennä päättäjäistansseihin tyttöystävänsä kanssa. Bronski Beatin kappale Smalltown Boy taas kertoo tarinan homopojan elämästä:

We watched The Prom on Netflix last weekend and that brought me the choice for this week's classic. In that musical Broadway stars go to Indiana to help a local girl get to the prom with her girl friend (naturally with a happy ending!). Whereas Bronski Beat's song Smalltown Boy tells a story about the life of a gay boy:

Olin juuri muuttanut Vaasaan, istuin tulevan ekan vaimoni kanssa Hankkenilla marraskuussa -84 ja näin pubipuolella telkkarista tämän koskettavan videon. Tuo tarina ja hieno kappale herätti tajuamaan, että kaikki ei olekaan heteroita ja että elämä muilla on paljon hankalampaa. Kun vielä kolme vuotta myöhemmin yksi pitkäaikainen kaveri kertoi olevansa homo, niin sen jälkeen ei voinut enää kuvitellakaan muuta tavoitetta yhteiskuntaan kuin tasa-arvo kaikille!

I had just moved to Vaasa and in November -84 I sat in a disco's pub side with my future first wife when I first saw this touching video. The story and a great song together woke me up to realize that gays really do exist and their life is much more complicated. Three years later a long time friend of mine told that he's gay and after that I couldn't imagine any other way things should be than that the society should be equal for everybody!

Viikon kuva - Inkeri

Viikon kuvana kävelyn varrelta otettu Inkeri-patsaan kuva. Viime toukokuussa  75-vuotias patsas on tehty liikenteessä kuolleiden lasten muistoksi (lisätietoja).

The photo of the week shows the Inkeri statue. This statue of a little girl called Inkeri was 75 years last May and it's for children who have died in traffic (more info).

"Patsas esittää nuorta tyttöä, jolla on pieni lintu käsissään, siipirikko, läheisellä moottoritiellä auton tönäisemäksi jäänyt vahingoittunut lintu. Tapaus on tosi, kyseessä ollut tyttö, Inkeri nimeltään, juoksi kesken leikin läheiseltä pihalta tielle pelastamaan lintua. Saatuaan linnun käsiinsä, syliinsä, tapahtui pahin mahdollinen – tyttö oli keskellä kaupunkiin päin tulevaa moottoritietä, eikä liian kovaa vauhtia tulleella autoilijalla ollut mahdollisuutta väistää – ja Inkeri itse jäi auton yliajamaksi, ja menehtyi saatuihin vammoihin. Vaasan uusi moottoritie koitui liian monen leikkivän lapsen kohtaloksi."

The case is true, the girl in question, named Inkeri, ran in the middle of a play from a nearby yard on the road to rescue a bird. After getting the bird in her hands, in her arms, the worst possible thing happened - the girl was in the middle of the highway coming to the city, and the motorist who came too fast had no chance to dodge - and Inkeri herself was left overridden by the car and died of the injuries. Vaasa's new motorway was the fate of too many children playing. ”

Saturday classic - Hullujussi

70-luvulta yksi lemppareitani on Hullujussi (1973-76). Nämä on soineet paljon automatkoilla, niin että mukulat on tainneet saada näitä kappaleita pysyvästi muistiinsa. Bändistä tulee aina ensimmäisenä mieleen vuoden 1974 hieno Hullu kitara:

One of my favourites from the 70's is Hullujussi, a Finnish humor band in 1973-76. I played them a lot while driving my car so my kids remember these probably immediately. Their first song here is a 1974 song Hullu kitara (= Grazy guitar):

Tuon on alunperin säveltänyt Toivo Kärki ja Reino Helismaan sanoittaman version Hullu hanuri esitti Esa Pakarinen vuonna -54.

Itse olin liian nuori näkemään näitä livenä, mutta kateellisena kuulin yhden työkaverin nähneen Hullujussin aikoinaan Mietaalla. Samoihin aikoihin esittelin näitä setäni vanhalta kelanauhurilta meillä vanhempineen vierailleelle luokkakaverille (moi Raija! ✋🏻😊).

Vanhemmassa Harva meistä on rautaa -videossa näkyy bändin varhaisempaa tyyliä. Jossain vaiheessa ideat rupesivat kuulemma loppumaan, niin teema vaihtui Eeki Mantereen kehittämän Viktor Kalborrek -hahmon ympärille. 

This was originally recorded in 1954 as 'grazy accordion' by quite famous Finnish songwriters and a singer.

I was too young to see Hullujussi live and I envied a former workmate who had seen them live in the 70's near my home. Around these years I remember introducing these songs on my uncle's coil recorder to my classmate who was visiting us with her parents.

The next song shows the band's style early in their career. At some point they ran out of ideas and collected the next album around the fictional Viktor Kalborrek -character that one of the band members developed.

Vasta näitä Hullujussi-haulla tulleita kappaleita selatessa muistin myös Eeki-Viktorin Syksyn sävelen vuodelta -78 eli Pikku pukki. Muita kappaleitaan löytyy täältä (esim Bingo Bango Bongo, Friduna Skikuna, Tyttö lilla nakkikioskilla, Takataan moos ja Diivaillen. Itselleni uusi oli parodia Deep Purplesta ja Uriah Heepistä nimellä Deep Heep 😄 ).

Bändi sai vaikutteita ja monta hittikappalettaan Louis Primalta. Surullinen sattuma on, että sekä Louis että Eeki Mantere kuolivat keuhkokuumeeseen.

Their songs are mostly covers but with clever words and speedy show style. You can find more of their songs from this Youtube search. One clever naming is their parody of  Deep Purple and Uriah Heep by a song named Deep Heep. 😄

The band was much influenced by Louis Prima and many of their hits were also from him. A sad coincidence is that both Louis and Eeki Mantere died of pneumonia.

Viikon kuva - Projekti Pipari

Viikon kuvana perinteinen joulukuun puuha - tällä kertaa taikinaa väänsi ekaa kertaa allekirjoittanut. Onneksi Tarja konsultoi, ei olisi tullut mitään ilman. 

The photo of the week is our traditional project of Holidays. Tarja did knowledge transfer of how gingerbread cookies are made. Without that I wouldn't have succeeded at all.

Ihan hyvä satsi tuli taas, vaikka annos oli vain yksinkertainen. 

The end result is quite enough even though we did just 1x the recipe.

Saturday classic - Fork

Tämä klassikko ei ole tehnyt mitään omaa musiikkiaan, mutta on esittänyt sitä ikimuistoisesti. Mahtava Fork (1996-2020) ja heidän aikoinaan konserttien päätöskappaleena laulama Viva La Vida:

Meillä oli liput päätöskonserttiinsa Vaasaan viime toukokuulle. 'Sattuneesta syystä' se siirtyi tiistaille 8.12. jonka päätimme jättää välistä turvallisuussyistä. Liput tyttärelleni Mariannelle, joka ei ole koskaan nähnyt Forkkia livenä. Eikä näe nytkään, koska eilen tuli spostia Vaasan konserttien perumisesta. Alkuviikon päätöskonsertti Turussa on onneksi videoitu ja tulee keväällä Yle Areenan kautta.

We had tickets to their End Tour concert in Vaasa last May. For 'some' reason it was delayed to Tuesday Dec 8th which we decided to skip for safety reasons. The tickets were given to my daughter Marianne. She has never seen Fork live - and will miss also this one because we got an email yesterday about the concert being cancelled. This week's concert in Turku was recorded and will be broadcasted oncoming Spring.

Saturday classic - Dire Straits

Tämän kertaiseen lauantaiklassikkoon ei liity mitään kummempia tarinoita, kunhan on iskenyt aikoinaan ja maistuu edelleenkin hyvältä. Dire Straitsia kuuntelin muutamaa levyä ja kärkipäästä kappaleita on tämä Walk of Life. Plussana on vielä tuo hauska video.

Today's Saturday classic doesn't come with any special story, I just liked the band and this and their other songs still feel good. I had three middle Dire Straits albums and one of the top songs from those is Walk of Life. And the video is funny.

Tässä tuli taas opittua itsekin uutta - bändin porukka näytti vaihtuneen aika tiuhaan, esimerkiksi Mark Knofplerin veli erosi kesken albumin teon ja myöhemmin toinenkin jäsen lähti studiosta ja olipa muitakin eroamisia. Videon alkuperäinen versio kertoi metron katusoittajan kohtalosta, mutta USAa varten tehty urheilupätkävideo on ollut suositumpi.

While making this post I learnt again new things - for example the mood of the band was probably quite stormy as several members resigned. Even Mark Knopfler's brother quit while they were recording an album. Another interesting fact was that there was an original version of this music video that told a story of a street musician but this sports version for the USA market became more popular.

Viikon kuva - Taivaan nuotit

Tämän kertainen viikon kuva on perjantaiselta kävelyltämme Tiklaspuistossa. Aurinkoa kaivattiin, mutta se näkyi enää vain puiden latvoissa ja sähköjohdoissa. Näyttivät ihan nuottiviivastolta.

The photo of the week is from last Friday when we walked in a park. We longed for the sun but it was visible only on tree tops and in the power line. It looked a lot like the stave.

Toisena kuvana loppusuoralle pääsi vieressä olleen hautausmaan silta.

The runner up photo was a bridge in the near-by cemetery.

Saturday classic - Time After Time

Tämän kertainen lauantaiklassikko on itselleni nostalgian huippuja. Elin juuri musiikillisesti herkimpiä vuosiani, kun tämä kappale tuli ja iski. Nykyään tämä on niitä muutamia, joissa osaan laulaa mukana about kaiken. Cindy Lauperin Time After Time:

The Saturday classic for today is a really nostalgic song for me. I was just in my musically sensitive years when this song came and hit me hard. Nowadays this is one of the few songs that I can sing along almost fully. Here's Cindy Lauper and Time After Time:

Tässäkin iso osa muistoja on tuo tunteellinen musiikkivideo, jonka näin lukemattomia kertoja silloin kasarin MTV-aikoina. Vasta nyt tuosta wikipediasta sain selville, ettei likka lähdekään etsimään itseään isoon kaupunkiin, vaan hänellä oli koti-ikävää ja hän meni kotiin katsomaan äitiään.

KTP:n päivänä olin yhdessä jakamassani videossa 97. katsoja - tähän tuli 18 000 katsojaa lisää noin kahdessa tunnissa, kun latasin sivun uudestaan. Kokonaismäärissä mennään pian 390 miljoonassa katsojassa!

As with many my 80's favorites also here the touching music video plays a big role - I saw this countless times from MTV. And I had thought that the girl in the story goes to a big city to 'look for herself' but instead I learnt from the wiki that she's home sick and worried about her mother, so she goes home.

With KTP songs that I blogged recently I was the viewer #97 in that one video whereas this has almost 390 million views! This got 18 000 new viewers while I refreshed the page after two hours.

Viikon kuva - Vaasan tarkka-ampujakasarmit

Tämän kertainen viikon kuva on päivittäiseltä Tarjaa odottelessa tekemältäni kävelyltä, joilla menin usein kasarmien ohi. Rakennukset on suojeltu, kunnostettu ja sieltä löytyy kaikenlaista harrastetilaa, majoitusliikettä, yhdistyksiä yms.

The photo of the week is from my daily walks waiting for Tarja's treatments. I often walked by the old army barracks here downtown. The buildings are protected and renovated and nowadays there are associations, accommodation etc.

Virallinen nimi on Vaasan tarkka-ampujakasarmit (linkki vie wikin lisätietoihin). Isoisäni pyöri näillä kulmilla 1922 tienoilla asepalvelusta suorittaessaan. Oman armeija-aikani vietin Oulun Hiukkavaarassa (II/85), mutta tämä oli käytössä vielä silloin. Vaasan rannikkopatteriston toiminta Vaasassa loppui vuoden 1998 lopussa ja osa rakennuksista siirtyi silloin kaupungille, osa jäi valtiolle.

The official name as translated is 'Vaasa sniper barracks' (the translated wiki page gives more information). My grandfather served in this area about 1922. I spent my military service in Oulu but at that time also Vaasa barracks were in use. The army usage stopped at the end of 1998 and the city of Vaasa got some of the buildings and some are still owned by the state.

Saturday classic - BÖC

Tämän päiväisenä lauantaiklassikkona on tarjolla toinen lyhennebändi, BÖC eli Blue Öyster Cult. Yhden kappaleen valitseminen oli taas vaikeaa, joten mennään helppoa tietä ja otetaan kaksi hyvää! Ensin Heavy Metal -scifi-animaatio-leffaa varten kirjoitettu Veteran of the Psychic Wars:

The Saturday classic for today brings another three letter band BÖC which stands for Blue Öyster Cult. I had trouble choosing just one song so I took the easy way and picked both of my top choices. First here's Veteran of of the Psychic Wars (this was written for a scifi animation movie Heavy Metal):

Bändin kuuluisin kappale on (Don't fear) The Reaper ja onhan sekin hyvä, mutta itselleni vain tuttu. Nämä molemmat valitut on taas levyltä Fire of Unknown Origin, joka on tullut kuunneltua lähes puhki.

Toisena kappaleena on Joan Crawford - laulu kertoo kuuluisan filmitähden pimeästä puolesta ja perustuu tyttärensä paljastuskirjaan. Mutta laulu on hieno!

(Don't fear) The Reaper is the most famous of  their songs and it's OK but not that big for me. Both of these songs are from the album Fire of Unknown Origin that I have listened to very much.

The second song here is about Joan Crawford. It's based on her daughter's book that tells about the darker side of the famous film star. But a great song!

Viikon kuvaan ei ollut montaa ehdokasta, mutta kaksi oli silti niin tasaväkisiä, että piti heitättää kolikkoa Sirillä. Värikkäällä siis mennään, varsinkin kun Tarja valitsi saman. Auringonlasku ja Suomen ilmailun kotkapatsas iltakävelyllä:

Saturday classic - OMD

Lauantaiklassikkona edelleen kasaria, eli OMD, joka ei tarkoita 'Oh my D...' vaan Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Ja nyt on reilut 40 vuotta heidän isommasta hitistään Enola Gay:

Kappaleen sanat ovat atomipommin ja sodan kritiikkiä, vaikka jotkut luulivat sen liittyvän jotenkin homoihin (meni jopa BBC:n kieltoon yhdessä ohjelmassa tuon takia). Reilu viikko sitten katsottiin hauska Enola Holmes -leffa (Sherlock Holmesin pikkusiskosta) Netflixistä ja opin siitä, että tuo on käännettynä Alone=Yksin.

This song is anti-war and anti-atomic bomb even though some thought that it has something to do with gays. Enola is familiar also from a fun Netflix movie Enola Holmes (about the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes) from which I learnt that Enola backwards is Alone.

Viikon kuva - Mietaalla

Viikon kuva on eiliseltä käynniltä Kurikassa, jonne ajoin äidin luota synttärivierailun jälkeen. Kävin kuvaamassa pikkuserkun Juha Miedon uuden patsaan sekä päivänvalossa, että näin pimeällä:

The photo of the week is from my hometown Kurikka where I visited yesterday after seeing my mother on her upcoming birthday. Here's a brand new statue of my second cousin Juha Mieto:

Itse asiassa tuolla sirkusmainoksen takana näkyy rakennus, jossa synnyin reilut 55 vuotta sitten.

Kävin lapsuuden kaverin kans päiväkävelyllä kotikylällä ja tässä Mietaan koululla, jossa olin ala-asteen. Tai no, ensimmäinen vuosi taisi olla kansakoulua ja sitten kakkosluokasta eteenpäin Kurikassa vaihtui voimaan peruskoulu. 

Actually the building behind that circus ad is the place where I was born a bit over 55 years ago.

In my home village I did a walk with my childhood friend to check out familiar places. One of them was this school where I spent the first six years of my education.

Maisemia tutkivalle tiedoksi, että tuolla taustalla linkkimastosta vähän vasemmalle näkyy kuuluisa Mietaan nuorisoseura.
