Oniipa

Tarja's home for three years in the 90s in Namibia was the other main target of our Africa trip besides South Africa. Many things had remained the same, but on the other hand the town was now much more modern. In those days Tarja and her work mate had done 200+ km ice cream shopping trips to, now there was a nice shopping centre in the town.

We stayed in one of the oldest still used buildings in Namibia. A mission station built in 1897 was in the 90s the home of mission superior and a guesthouse. Now it's just an inexpensive guesthouse for anyone who asked to rent it.

The house library

Meillä oli käytössämme koko 10 huoneinen talo, eli viitisen makuuhuonetta, keittiö, työhuone, kirjasto, ruokatila, olohuone, sauna ja iso palju.
We had just for ourselves the whole 10 room house: about five bedrooms, kitchen, working room, library, dining room, living room, sauna and an indoor pool.

On Monday we visited Elcin centre on the other side of the road. It was Tarja's old work place and current superior gave us a round tour of the place. There were still two workers who they hired at those days and a third one got a call from us. We also peeked from outside the house where she stayed.

Visiting Elcin boss

The other worker still there who was hired in the 90s was Jairus.

Jairus and Tarja

We also visited the hospital museum of the area and the Mission museum in other village. A teasing visit was made to a bank for money in a bank account that had not been used in 23 years. 😀 We didn't get those.

Here's the care taker of area restaurant and guest house, who took care of our laundry. We also bought her handicraft to bring back to Finland.

Shopping moment

Compared to the 90s the safety situation had changed as earlier there were no burglaries. The Mission station was a few years ago guarded at nights, nowadays it had 24/7 armed guard. A Finnish couple in the neighbouring house told that somebody was in the night even in their house. When we left I took photos of caretakers and even though the guard didn't understand me asking in English about getting the photos, she wanted her picture to be taken. 😊

Afrikan reissun albumiin tuli 22 kuvaa lisää Oniipasta. Tervetuloa sinnekin!
There's now 22 new Oniipa photos in the album of our Africa trip. Welcome there too!
