Borneo / Sandakan video

Nyt sain taas aikaiseksi rakentaa videon. Aiheena on pari päivää sitten kuvin blogattu Sandakan Borneon pohjoispäädyssä.
Now I finalized a video about our Sandakan days in Borneo. I blogged about it a few days ago with photos.

Hiukan harmi, etten huomannut ottaa yhtään videota Malaijinkarhuista.

Kiiiiiiits! 😊
Too bad that I didn't take any video of Sun bears. They are displayed here only with a photograph. Also, many other scenes are only in photos and you can find them starting here (then click the right arrow)

If you happen to follow Youtube channels please also subscribe my channel, there's still room! Thanks! 😊

Sandakan / Borneo

Vihdoin tuli käsitelty Malesian matkan isoin kuvasatsi - meidän 48 tuntia Borneon Sandakanissa, jossa nähtiin eniten oikeaa viidakkoa. Majoituksena oli Sepilok Nature Resort, jossa heti ihasteltiin pesuhuoneen sementtistä 'ammetta':
Finally, I rated and published the biggest photo package of our Malaysia trip, our 48 hrs in Sandakan / Borneo next to the real jungle. Our accommodation was Sepilok Nature Resort where we admired the bathtub made of cement:

Cement Bath tub

Menomatkalla jo näkyi sademetsien katoamisen surullinen tilanne. Nuo tasaiset alueet on pelkkää öljypalmua, jossa eläimistö ei pärjää. Borneolta on kadonnut 23% sademetsästä 40 vuodessa. Maailma on ikävän monimutkainen.
Already on our flight, we could see the sad situation. Those flat areas are plain oil palm fields where animals can't live. Borneo has lost 23% of its rain forests in 40 years, that's over 98 000 km2. The boycott of palm oil seems to be a controversial thing - on the other hand, palm oil is bad, but I've seen an article that boycotting it is worse. The world is an annoyingly complicated place.

Palm oil fields instead of the jungle

Tuo majoitus olikin ylikätevässä paikassa, Sademetsä-keskukseen oli kilometrin kävely, Oranki- ja Malaijikarhupaikkoihin pari sataa metriä ja jokiretken sai oman hotellin järjestämänä. Alue oli pienen lammen ympärillä olevia mökkejä:
Our accommodation was located conveniently. Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) was just one-kilometre walk, Orangutan and Bornean Sun Bear parks were in just few hundred meters away. And our river cruise was arranged by the hotel. The cottages are around a small bond:

Sepilok Nature Resort

Tulopäivänä lähdettiin heti kohti sademetsäkeskusta, että ehditään käydä siellä ennen auringonlaskua. Paikassa on kasvitieteellinen puutarha ja iso viidakko-osuus, jossa 10+ metrin korkeudella puunlatvapolku. Muutamassa kohdassa sai vielä lisäkorkeutta näkötornista:
On our arrival date, we headed immediately towards the RDC so that we could visit it before the sunset. There are a botanical garden and a big rain forest part with a canopy walkway over 10 meters from the ground. A few viewing towers added a lot to the sightseeing:

A viewing tower at canopy walkway

Tuolla metsän uumenissa oli hienoa kävellä. Aurinkokin jo vähän laski:
It was a really nice place to walk. Sun was already setting:

On the next morning after breakfast, we headed to the Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre. This indoor viewing showed new-comer feeding platforms. New orangutangs are kept a couple of weeks in separation in case they have some contagious disease.

The newcomer feeding area

At nine o'clock they started the feeding and there were a couple of orangutangs and a cautious monkey mother with her baby. The food is the same every day so that orangutangs would be bored and search for some variation from the jungle.

The boring lunch arrives

It's handy to use your foot as your extra hand!

Orangutan at feeding platform

After the Orangutang feeding, we walked back to the hotel, had a resting break and then lunch. Then we started a 1,5 hrs drive with our guide and the driver to a river cruise. We were the only ones on that day so it was a really private trip with three experienced pairs of eyes to help finding animals.

Paluumatkalla ajettiin taas toista sataa kilometriä ja suunnilleen koko ajan oli tien vierellä palmuöljymetsää. Kerran näkyi parin sadan metrin pätkä normaalia metsää.
On our way back we drove again over a hundred kilometres watching just palm oil fields. There was just a few hundred metres of a normal forest.

Meidän opas, Rezinlee suostui malliksi 100 tuntematonta projektiini.
Our guide Rezinlee agreed to participate in my 100 strangers project.

At the morning of the third day, we walked to Bornean Sun Bear conservation centre which is next to the Orangutan centre. We were there almost alone as most of the tourists visited first the other place.

Kyseessä on maailman pienin karhulaji ja kuulemma yksi älykkäimmistäkin. Sekä selvästi myös yksi söpöimmistä!
This is the world's smallest bear species and it's said to be one of the most clever ones. And clearly one of the cutest too!

Reissusattumuksia

Vaihteeksi matkamuisteluna jotain outoja/hauskoja tai muuten ikimuistoisia sattumia matkoiltamme.

Vuorotteluvuotemme 2016 meni isosti matkustellessa.
Here are some odd, funny or otherwise memorable incidents from our travels.

Our sabbatical year 2016 involved a lot of travelling. We didn't see other Finns that often but one of the most surprising was on the South Island of New Zealand. We were starting a day trip to Doubtful Sound fjord and suddenly people speaking Finnish joined to the queue. They were on a group trip around both parts of NZ. It was fun to discuss experiences with them. The photo below is from the end of the first part of the trip as Finns and others are leaving the first ship.

The first boat trip done

Afrikan kiertoajelulla 2016 autostamme katosi rekisterikilpi jossain Namibian soratiellä. Ajotauolta otettiin ao. kuva, josta jälkikäteen sain selville katoamisen viimeistään-hetken.
During our Africa road trip 2016, we lost our licence plate somewhere on the dirt roads of Namibia. The photo below was the first one where it was missing and two days after that some guys told us it's missing. We saw police twice but they didn't react to this. A new plate was done for us in a little workshop in Cape Town where they just asked the licence number and from which state it was. Wouldn't have happened in Finland!

Have a break

The common language has sometimes been hard to find and the most curious case happened in the wine region of Chile. The photo below shows the very valley and here's a blog post from that day. For lunch we parked to a small village. The parking area supervisor didn't speak English, our Spanish was rusty but we could speak Swedish with him! He had lived in Stockholm for a while.

Scenery in Wine valley

Lomakkeessa kysyttiin rotua. Me pohdittiin, että mitä kirjoittaisi - eurooppalainen, valkoinen vai kaukaasialainen (kuten USA-poliisisarjoissa). Lomakkeesta ei tullut otettua kuvaa, joten näkymä edelliseltä välilaskulta Dohasta.
The immigration has been odd in some places and even difficult (by car to Zimbabwe). But the strangest question was in an immigration form while entering Malaysia. They asked our race and we were wondering what to answer - European, white or caucasian (according to US police tv-series). I didn't photograph the form so below a view from the previous airport in Doha.

Doha airport view

Another surprise meeting of Finns was on the previously mentioned southern Africa trip. We drove to Swaziland to a small hotel and on the very first breakfast, we heard Finnish from the next table. Those were Harri & Hanna who became my first 100 strangers project participants (all the photos are here).

Harri & Henna

Another New Zealand incident happened on the opposite slope of the view below. I didn't remember to follow all the meters of our Campervan and finally found out why it kept stalling for two days. The radiator coolant was almost finished and I realized that after the sixth stall on that steep road up. An Italian guy had driven behind us and let us know that he's really annoyed. Fortunately, the engine didn't get broken and we got back down to a gasoline station by that bay.

The view of Akaroa bay

Menetetyistä hetkistä ehkä harmittavin on 2012 Australian Cairnsissa, jonne mentiin katsomaan täydellistä auringonpimennystä.
Maybe the most annoying missed minute happened in 2012 in Cairns, Australia. We started our trip with a total eclipse of the Sun. The wise move would have been starting driving towards the highland at 3 a.m. but we went to City beach where also the hotel transferred the visitors. The Sun was otherwise visible but just during the critical 3 minutes, there was a cloud covering it. Eclipse trip to the USA on 2017 got cancelled because #fuckcancer and 2020 Dec in Chile for the same reason. Fortunately, that Australia trip had also much more nice things to see.

The total eclipse moment

Reissukuvien albumikokoelmassa löytyy näitä paikkoja ja muutamia muitakin. Valitettavasti paljon kuvia on vielä odottamassa julkaisuaan. Mutta onnea kaikille matkaan ja muutenkin!
The album collection of our photos shows these places and some more. Too bad that I have a lot of photos waiting to be published. But everybody: good luck for your trips and in the other life!

Kuala Lumpur 2

I now organized my Kuala Lumpur photos of the third day and here's a few of them. We started the day by walking much too long route to the Rain forest park near our hotel. The views from canopy walkway were full of green.

A Canopy walkway

Before walking to the KL Tower I quickly took some scenery photos with my drone. The queue in the lobby of KL Tower was so long that we decided Twin Towers being enough. So we just ate a pizza for lunch in one of the restaurants there.

KL Tower and park view

Siirryttiin Grabilla kansalliseen taidegalleriaan - iso rakennus, jossa on neljä eri osastoa. Vähän ihmisiä ja ihan mukavaa katseltavaa.
After that we took a Grab ride to National Art Gallery which is a huge building containing four galleries. Very few people and nice exhibitions.

National Art Gallery

Sovelluksesta sai seurata auton tuloa meitä kohti. Sieltä tuli äiti ja tytär, joilta kesti n. tunti viedä meidät ruuhkassa viisi kilometria hotellille.
The plan was to finalize the day by visiting the lake and park area behind the gallery but fortunately, the first drops of oncoming rain came already when we wondered the best route. We returned to the Gallery cafe and after looking the downpour for a while we ordered again a Grab ride. It took about an hour during the rush hour for a mother and her daughter to drive us to our hotel.

Grab on it's way to save us

Näiden lisäksi julkaisin kolme muutakin kuvaa tuolta päivältä tänne albumiin. Tervetuloa kurkkaamaan nekin!
In addition to these I published three other photos of that day to this album. Welcome there too!

Kuala Lumpur

Petronas kaksoistornien alue tarjosi paljon kuvattavaa. Alla oleva puutarha ja näkymä on tornien juurelta niistä pois päin katsottuna.
We spent the first part of our Malaysia trip in Kuala Lumpur. We didn't try to search anything unusual but wandered slowly around the common tourist attractions. The Petronas Twin Towers area had a lot to see. The garden and view below are shot next to the towers towards the South.

City reflections

There seems to be a constant queue to the towers so buying tickets in advance is wise. We bought them on the first morning for the following day and then continued to the big shopping centre and other areas near it. Below's the last proof of my favourite hat bought from Australia in 2012. I forgot it to the toilet of the Conference centre and lost and found of the place had no record of it on the next day. Fortunately, similar hats are sold online so now I got one size bigger to have a better blood circulating in my scalp. 😊

Me and the last climpse of my Kangaroo hat

Suositeltava paikka! Ekan päivän muuna ohjelmana kierrettiin hotellin kautta katsomaan Malesian turisti-infoa, joka oli hieno vanhanaikainen rakennus hotellin lähellä toisella puolella.
We booked the accommodation from the Concorde hotel as our friend suggested. A really handy place to walk to twin towers and other places. 👍 The other program for the first day was to walk via our hotel to see the Malaysian tourist information complex. It was a nice old fashioned group of buildings on the other side of Concorde.

Concorde hotel - we stayed here

Malesiassa ja seitsemässä lähivaltiossa on Uberin sijasta käytössä markkinat voittanut Grab, jota me käytettiin lähes kaikkiin liikkumisiin.

In Malaysia and seven other countries, the biggest Uber-style taxi service is Grab, which we used for almost all our transfers. It has a fixed price but no need to use a credit card as the payment can be paid in cash. Otherwise, it's like Uber, so you don't need to explain the destination to the driver. The price level is cheap for us so we helped drivers by tipping.

On the second day, we first visited the Twin towers and then used Grab to get to the Merdeka square. This cool occasional fog installation was over the river that's behind Sultan Abdul Samad building.

Cloudy river

After walking around the square we headed to Lake Gardens park which has a lot to see: bird park, butterfly park, orchid park, planetarium and the National monument. We just peeked the entrance building of butterfly park and continued to the main park. There I got a photo of this odd red-belly squirrellike guy:

A strange squirrel

Malesian kaikki kuvat löytyvät täältä albumistaan. Sinne meni näiden yo. kuvien lisäksi kuusi muuta uutta Kuala Lumpur otosta. Tervetuloa sinnekin!

Putrajaya / Malesia

Maybe half of the photos of our trip to Malaysia are still waiting but here's one more set. This time I handled pics of our last day which we spent in Putrajaya. Our flights to Borneo were on a different ticket so we took one buffer day to be on the safe side. The location was also handy as it was midway between the airport and Kuala Lumpur.

Main mosque in Putrajaya

Yllä näkymä hotelliltamme kohti päämoskeijaa ja taaempana olevaa oikeuspalatsia. Korona näkyi jo tammikuussa, sillä turistien pääsy moskeijaan oli kielletty edellisenä päivänä.

Alla Zenith Putrajaya hotellin ylimmän kerroksen ravintolassa iltapalaksi jaettu pizza ja pimenevä ilta näköaloineen.
The view above was from our hotel towards Putra mosque and the Palace of Justice. Covid-19 affected us already in January as that mosque had been closed for tourists on the previous day.

Below our split pizza for an evening snack at the hotel's top floor restaurant. The view was really nice.

A split pizza for dinner

Putrajaya on Malesian vuonna 1995 perustettu uusi hallinnollinen keskus. Keskellä on iso tekojärvi ja muutenkin paikka on nykyaikaisen tilava.
We considered also visiting Genting Highlands for the last day but this was much closer to the airport so we chose less stress. Putrajaya was founded in 1995 as a planned city to be the administrative centre of Malaysia. There's a big artificial lake and the whole place is modern and spacious.

City title at main square

Hiukan ylänäkymää Millenium monumentista pikaisesti nostetulla dronella. Tuossa spiraalimaisessa kävelytasanteessa oli seinäminä Malesian historian tapahtumia kohti nykyaikaa etenevinä tauluina.
The Millenium Monument as seen from a briefly elevated drone. The spiral walking platform had walls telling about the events of Malaysia's history towards the present day.

Millenium monument

Ja vielä Millenium monumentti hotelliltamme nähtynä. Iso rakennus takanaan on moskeija ja pallo edessä oli maisemien katselua varten ylös nostettava kaasupallo. Etunurkasta löytyy vielä mäkkärin logo - siellä käytiin iltapäiväkahvilla.
And below the view from our hotel Zenith Putrajaya to the South. Behind Millenium Monument is a big mosque and in front of it is a sightseeing balloon. The McDonalds logo in the bottom left corner shows the place of our afternoon coffee break.

Malesian kuvat löytyvät täältä albumistaan, jossa nämä tässä olleet Putrajayan otokset + muutama muu kuva ovat ihan viimeisenä. Tervetuloa sinnekin!

Manukan saari

I now published photos of our two days and three nights in January at Manukan island in Malaysia. We stayed in Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. Only Hillside Villas were available and that was one of our finest accommodations ever. A view from the downstairs balcony to the beach:

Balcony view

The island is a part of Nature reserve and a popular destination for day visitors, but resort guests have a separate beach and a pool area. I took a scuba dive already on the first day. The trip was truly a private one as there were only me, my guide and another guy taking photos.

Me scuba diving

The sunset point was just behind the western end of the island. A path leads there, but returning in dark over 1 km wasn't tempting and the view was quite nice already from our beach.

Sunset

Illalliselle ilmaantui bändi, joka kävi erikseen jokaisessa pöydässä ja soitti muutaman toivotun kappaleen, Coldplay ei ollut heille tuttu, mutta Beatlesiä ja Love is all around tulivat heti.
During the dinner, a band visited every table and played a few wished songs. They didn't know Coldplay but we got, for example, the Beatles and Love is all around.

The band performed for each table

Saarella pyöri isoja liskoja tutkiskelemassa paikkoja:
A few big lizards were wandering around the island:

One of island's lizards

Boats bringing day visitors arrived at that pier several times during the day - a lot of Chinese and Malaysian tourists were wandering around the public side with life jackets on. Our private beach was peaceful though and the last boat departed at 17.00.

The sea view

And here one more view of our area towards the beach. Our villa was the rearmost of these, the one closest to the beach.

Villa side view

Julkaisin yo. kuvien lisäksi monta muutakin Manukan saarelta Malesia-albumiin, joten tervetuloa sinnekin!
I published in addition to the ones above several other photos to the Malaysia album. Welcome there too!

Reilusti matkalle

Lentämisen vastuullisuudesta on kattava bloggaus Annalla.
Words fair and responsible have recently been mentioned more and more together with the word travel. Another thing that motivated to thig blog post was a question that my workmate asked recently: 'Timo, are you nowadays trying to save the world?'. That was a bit odd since I think I've never tried to ruin the world.

So, below a few notes and links to read about this area.

I realized seven years ago that climate change is a big risk and wrote a blog post about a Finnish book telling how to prevent it. After that, I started to donate for the cause and to compensate for my vacation flights via Climate Friendly. It later started to co-operate just with companies but I found Finnish organizations that are working in the same area. For example, Carbon market (Hiilipörssi briefly in English) which is a marketplace for the restoration of ditched peatlands. Via it, with one purchase I'm compensating two return flights to Singapore every year. I also compensate my other living by supporting Compensate. Similar parties are probably found in your country too.

Doha airport view

We have planned a long time to take a cruise and visit a few little countries in the Caribbean. This cruise ship in Norway's Geiranger reminded me of clean travelling about which I read about (for example the polluting cruises). Fortunately, there are also good options - if you choose one of the newest cruise ships you probably cause less harm for the environment.

Matkallamme vierailimme kuntoutuskeskuksessa, jossa hylättyjä lemmikkiorankeja opetetaan viidakkoon:
One part of fair travel is also well being of animals. For example many places offer elephant riding but few tourists know that it's not good for those poor fellows: their back is not strong enough and their 'training' is cruel. More info can be read here.

In Malaysia, some take cute Orangutan babies as pets and abandon them to the roadside when they are bigger and less cute. We visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, which teaches young abandoned Orangutangs to live in the jungle:

Reilun/vastuullisen matkailun aiheeseen kuuluu myös esimerkiksi käyttäytyminen. Joissain suosituissa paikoissa turismin ongelma onkin sikailevat turistit.

A part of the fair and responsible travelling is also, for example, good behaviour. In some popular destinations, the problem is tourists behaving badly. I heard the advice that common sense works here too - do as you'd like to be treated in your own home. Don't litter or make noise or disturb others.

The next thing is not directly about travelling, but I've changed my internet searches (also regarding travels) to Ecosia.org which is the only search engine with a negative carbon footprint. 👍 They are using all the profits of ads to plant trees. It's based on Bing, so it's not as good as Google for all searches but if I don't find the information then I google it.

A lot can be found if you ecosia the subject (got to admit that it's not as good a verb as google) from the internet. For example, Responsible Travel has a good looking site. There are surely pages also on Facebook (just search 'responsible travel') where you can discuss the subject.

Kinabalu park

I've received a few questions about Kinabalu park trip in Sabah province at Borneo, so I chose it as the subject of my first Malaysia blog post. Here are the places we visited and the options we considered.

Our group trip lasted 10 hours and about all driving was really bumpy. The scenery was really nice though - this photo is from the first stop after an hour of driving. There was a bus stop with a viewing platform to Kinabalu mountain along with toilets and shops:

Originally we had a car booked for five days (130 €) with the aim of doing the Kinabalu trip. We cancelled it as Grab was so easy and inexpensive, and also to avoid occasional rush hours. Renting another car on the spot would have cost the same as those five days. Getting a taxi driver for a day would have been 500 MYR (110 €). Participating in a package trip was 380 MYR (84 €) for the two of us including the lunch and entrance fees.

Starting the short nature path

Yllä meidän seurue ennen Kinabalu puiston lyhyttä luontopolkua. Opas esitteli meille sademetsää - nähtiin toiseksi pienin orkidealaji, rottinkia luonnossa ja syötäviä pinkkimarjoja. Sieltä jatkettiin kohti puunlatvakävelytietä kahdella välipysähdyksellä: ao. näköalapaikka monella eri selfie-rakennelmalla ja taustan mäen huipulla oleva Desa-maitotila.
(Above) Our group just before starting a short nature path in Kinabalu Park. The guide presented the rain forest for us - the second smallest orchid species, rattan and edible pink berries. From there we continued towards the canopy walkway site. Stops first in a scenery site with several selfie constructs and in the Desa dairy farm (at the top of that photo's hill in the middle).

After lunch we walked to the other side of the road to Pouring Hot Springs area. There was a lengthy path / steps to canopy walkway:

Olisi kannattanut vain liottaa jalkojaan niinkuin about kaikki muut.
After the walk, we had 30 minutes of free time and our ambitious plan was to change swimwear and visit the hot paths. We did that in a hurry but still, we were 3 minutes late to the agreed meeting time. The wise move would have been to soak just our feet like everybody else did.

Hot Springs (or its cooled water)

Near the hot springs there is Adenna Rafflesia Garden and we were lucky: one Rafflesia flower was open just during our visit (the flower lasts 5-7 days and happens once after 1-2 years). It cost extra 30 MYR (6,6 € / 7,3 USD) per person (including 20 MYR discount).

Rafflesia location

Hauskan tuntuista.
The last stop was by a small river where we fed goldfish. Food was placed to your fist and then you opened it slowly below the surface. Those fish sucked up really hard and all of them tried to get close. Quite a funny feeling.

They really suck

Kalat eivät olleet mitään allaskaloja, vaan elivät joessa ja tuon sillan vieressä oli ruokintapaikka. Tämän jälkeen alkoikin pysähtymätön reilun kahden tunnin täryytys kohti Kota Kinabalua.
The fish were not in any pool but they lived in the river below and feeding happened near that bridge. After this, we started over two hours long shaky drive towards Kota Kinabalu.
