Saturday classic - One Night in Bangkok

Pysytään vielä kasarilla ja hoidetaan monta klassikkoaihetta yhdellä kertaa. Abba, shakki (Queen's Gambit on mainio sarja) ja musikaalit (sori Sus'). Tämän -84 julkaistun albumin sävelsivät Abban BB-pojat ja siitä jatkettu CHESS-musikaali sai ensi-iltansa -86. Aiemmin en ollut kuullut näitä muita kappaleita, mutta eivätpä ne nytkään kovin iskeneet. Mutta tämä One Night in Bangkok tuntuu edelleen hyvältä! 

Let's stay in the 80's for a while and check out several classic subjects with one stone: Abba, chess (Queen's Gambit is an excellent tv series) and musicals. The Chess album was published in -84 and it's music was composed by Abba guys. The CHESS musical premiered in -86. In my opinion the other songs in that musical are not that special but this One Night in Bangkok has been and is still one of my favourites.

Musikaali kertoo kolmiodraaman kylmän sodan aikana pidetyssä shakkiottelussa, jossa ovat vastakkain USAn ja Neuvostoliiton mestarit. Toisen pelaajan managerina toiminut nainen rakastuu sitten vastapuolen pelaajaan.

Tämän kappaleen laulaja on Murray Head. Musikaalin levyllä ja ensimmäisessä teatteriversiossa oli yhtenä pääosan esittäjänä Elaine Paige, jonka nimen olen oppinut Tarjalta, että tämä osaa laulaa! Ja onkin tosiaan maailmankuulu.

Abba-Björnin kanssa musikaalia oli sanoittamassa Tim Rice, joka on ollut tekemässä myös esim. musikaaleja Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aida, Aladdin jne jne. Elämän makua hahmoihin tuli wikissä näkynyt tieto, että Timille tuli avioero kun selvisi, että hänellä oli suhde Elainen kanssa.

The musical tells about a love triangle that takes place in a chess tournament between the USA and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The manager of the other player falls in love with the opposite player.

This song is sung by Murray Head. One of the main characters in the musical's first version and the singer in the album is Elaine Paige. The name is familiar to me because Tarja taught me that she can really sing! And indeed, she's world famous.

The lyrics were written by Björn of Abba and Tim Rice, who's behind some other musicals too: Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aida, Aladdin etc. etc. Some taste of life to these persons comes from a detail in wikipedia that Tim got a divorce because his affair with Elaine was published.

What 3 Words

Tuossa jokunen aika sitten tuli vastaan kätevä sovellus! Systeemi on perustettu jo 2013, mutta jostain syystä löysin sen vasta nyt.

Eli what3words on ruuduttanut koko maapallon 3x3 metrin ruutuihin ja jokaiselle on oma kolmisanainen osoitteensa haluamallaan kielellä. Esim. Vaasassa hauska parveke auringonlaskun ja maisemien katseluun löytyy osoitteesta majavat.vintti.ikääntyä.

Some time ago I found a handy app! The system was actually founded already in 2013 but for some reason I noticed it now.

What3words has made a 3x3 meter (3m = 9,8ft) grid over the whole Earth and each square has an own three-word-address in the language of your choise. For example in Vaasa you can find a fun private terrace to view sunset or scenery in this address: game.chose.grills.

 

 

Sovellus on tietysti ilmainen ja kuten yo. ruudunkuvista näkyykin, niin paikkoja voi tallentaa itselleen ja jakaa kavereille (lisätietoja appsista). Reittiohjeet perille omaan kohderuutuun saa joko eri karttojen kautta tai kompassinuolena, joka kertoo suunnan ja etäisyyden.

Jokaiselle paikalle kun ei ole katuosoitetta, niin näin voi tarkasti kertoa tapaamispaikan epävirallisempiinkin osoitteisiin, näköalapaikoille jne jne. Toki Googlemapsillä voi jakaa koordinaatit, mutta puhelimessa on helpompi sanoa kolme sanaa kuin litania numeroita.

Ainakin joissain maissa hätäkeskuskin tuntee systeemin ja ainakin Mersu & Ford tukevat tätä autonavigaattorissaan. 

The app is naturally free and as you can see above (my app in Finnish 😊), there are functionalities for sharing and saving locations. You can get directions via different maps or as a compass needle pointing towards your destination square.

As every place on Earth doesn't have a street address this is a handy way to tell the exact location to parks, sceneries, etc. Of course you can share a place with google maps, but it's easier to say three words over the phone than 20 numbers.

At least in some countries also Emergency centres know this system. Also for example Mercedes Benz and Ford support the system in their navigators.

Viikon kuva - Hiihtolenkki jäällä

Eilen käytiin reippailemassa Pirjon ja Sepon kanssa meren jäällä (kävelyineen 8,5 km). Ehdittiin onneksi hoitaa lähes koko hiihto ennen kuin alkoi se jää/lumisade, mutta hankeen oman ladun tekeminen oli ihan reipasta.

Yesterday we had some brisk exercise with Pirjo and Seppo on the sea ice (8,5km including walking). Fortunately, we got almost the whole xc-skiing done before the ice/snow rain started. And doing our own tracks was a 'warming' addition. 

Vähän joka asian kohdalla (UMK21) tulee mieleen, että mitä Tarja olisi tästä sanonut tai tykännyt. Vaikka olisi eilistä keliä inhonnut (ladut piti olla valmiit, syvät ja kiinteät), niin asiasta olisi nauttinut. Taas mukava päivä Pirjon ja Sepon kanssa ja samalla ulkoilua! Puhuttiin Pirjon kanssa, että miksiköhän tätä ei tullut toteutettua aiempina vuosina, kun Tarja olisi voinut olla mukana. Silloin vain tuli mentyä yleensä sen helpon kautta ja käytyä pikaisesti omaan tahtiin ulkoilemassa. Ei tajuttu, että tilaisuudet loppuisivat joskus.

Nowadays I often think of different things that what Tarja would have said or thought about different things. Even though she would have hated the conditions yesterday (skiing tracks needed to be ready, deep and firm) but she would have loved it otherwise. A nice stay with Pirjo and Seppo and exercise outdoors! I talked with Pirjo that sadly we didn't do this earlier when Tarja could have participated. Back then we just slipped to easy way and did our outdoor activities just on our own schedule. We didn't realize that it wouldn't last forever.

Saturday classic - London calling

Soitetaanpa nyt vaihteeksi ulkomaista klassikkoa. Teininä kuuntelin paljon The Clashin levyä London calling. Nimikappale voi olla ehkä kulunut paljosta soitosta, mutta on silti edelleen mahtava! Ja on ehkä ainoa Bond-leffassa soinut punk-kappale. Tämä maailmanlopusta kertova laulu loppuukin sitten SOS-morsekoodiin.

After a few Finnish songs here's something in English for a change. As a teenager I listened to London calling a lot, an album by The Clash. The title song may be too familiar but it's still super good! And it may be the only punk song that made it to a Bond movie. The lyrics are about armageddon so the song ends with S-O-S morse codes.

Bändi on perustettu vuonna -76 ja tuo pääteoslevy ilmestyi vuonna -79. The Clashin seuraavaa levyä Sandinista! kuuntelin myös kohtuullisesti, mutta hiukan ihmetellen - sen kappaleet olivat aika 'erikoisia'. Tuo on peräti kolmois-LP, joten mukana on kyllä hyvääkin kamaa. Eri kappaleita on kätevä vilkaista bändin omalta Youtube-kanavalta.

The Clash hajosi -86 ja kuulemma olisivat luultavasti palanneet yhteen 2000-luvulla, mutta laulajan Joe Strummerin yllättävä kuolema sydänkohtaukseen 50-vuotiaana 2002 lopetti ne suunnitelmat.

The Clash was founded in -76 and their main album London calling came out in -79. Their next album Sandinista! is a 3LP i.e. triple album. I listened to it too, but it was a bit strange experience - some of the songs are 'special'. But there are some good songs too. In case you want to hear a bit more it's easy to peek their songs from The Clash Youtube channel.

The band broke up in -86 and there were talks inside that they would have returned in the 2000s but the sudden heart attack of lead singer Joe Strummer in 2002 ended those plans. He was only 50 years old.

Viikon kuva - Elämä jatkuu

Viikon kuvana on nyt auringonlaskun värejä työkaverin turvallisesti ulkona järjestämällä iltapala-kävelyllä. -14C oli kova paikka mun varpaiden lisäksi varmaan mahdollisille viruksillekin, mutta ainakin seura ja tarjoilut oli lämmintä & priimaa. Kiitos Jaana ja Petri!

The Photo of the Week is sunset colors in an evening snack walk that my work mate arranged. Temperature was -14C (about 7F) so I suppose it was as tough for viruses as to my toes. But both the company and the picnic lunch were warm and excellent. Thanks Jaana and Petri!

Kuvaa valitessa oli taas pari suosikkia ja tässä alla vielä se hopealle sijoittunut. Polku jatkuu eteenpäin, vaatii vähän tarpomista, mutta muutkin ovat sitä menneet. Olipa syvällistä.

Saturday classic - Vesala

Tarjan kuolemasta on nyt kuukausi ja taas mun silmät kostuu tästä Vesalan kappaleesta, jonka Tarja kuunteli kyynelehtien viime vuonna monta kertaa. "Miten voikin yhden tyypin elämässä kaikki paska tapahtuu"

It's now one month since Tarja died and again my eyes get wet when I listen to this song by Vesala. Last year Tarja listened to this a lot and cried every time. Part of the lyrics is "How can all shit happen to one person"

Tarjalla katosi teini-iässä näkö lähes kokonaan (100% invaliditeettiaste), kun tarkan näön solut silmästä tuhoutuivat. Opiskelussa + töissä piti tsempata paljon enemmän, mutta kaikki eivät välttämättä edes huomanneet tuota, kun ei koskaan tehnyt asiasta numeroa. Toki sen takia muistinsa oli kehittynyt tosi hyväksi ja ei koskaan palavereissa tehnyt muuta, kuin vain kuunteli.

Tykättiin molemmat paljon Vesalasta ja ilman tätä tilannetta oma klassikkoni olisi ollut Älä Droppaa Mun Tunnelmaa. Tuossa on hieno melodia/musa ja sanoitus, joka mielestäni kuuluu jo nerouden piiriin.

Tarja became blind in her teenage when the cells of her central vision degenerated. She had to work much more in studying and in her jobs, but since she didn't bring up the issue, not all necessary realized the case. But due to that her memory was very good and she was always listening, and not doing anything else during the meetings etc.

We both liked this artist very much and without the one month situation I would have picked as my favourite this song of hers (name translates to 'don't drop my mood'). In addition to it's great music I find the lyrics brilliant (as translated they are quite a mess, but you'll get a part of it...)

Viikon kuva - Vilahdus normaalia

Sunnuntaina uskaltauduttiin kokeilemaan normaalia elämää pari tuntia, kun kerran kaikki oli olleet viikon eristyksissä. Lounas, juttelua ja kaksi erää Mysteriumia - eka peli hävittiin, mutta toinen jo voitettiin.

On Sunday we dared to test the normal life for a couple of hours as all of us had been isolated for a week. A lunch, discussions and two rounds of Mysterium - at first we lost, but the second game we won.

Tulevina viikkoina palataan taas Tabletop Simulatorin kautta pelaamaan, mutta nyt oli vähän erikoistapaus, kun piti paperitöitäkin tehdä.

Tuo Mysterium on yhteistyöpeli, joka on vähän kuin Cluedo, mutta ilman liikkumisia. Yksi pelaajista on kummitus, joka yrittää neuvoa meedioita tappajansa (+ paikka ja ase) selvittämisessä näkykorteilla. Ihan mukava! Tarja olis tykännyt tästä, kun ei ollut mitään kiirettä (paitsi 2 minuutin tiimalasi) ja ratkaisuja voi yhdessä jutellen miettiä. Lisäksi kilpailuvietti kohdistuu peliä vastaan, eikä toisiin pelaajiin.

In oncoming weeks we'll return to play the games in the Tabletop Simulator but this week was a special case as it included some paperwork.

Mysterium is a co-operation game which is a bit like Cluedo but without moving on a board. One player is a ghost who tries to advice psychics with vision cards to find out it's murderer (and the place & the weapon). A nice game! Tarja would have liked this since it was more discussing together and it required not much hurrying (except that 2 minute hourglass). Also the competitive drive was towards the game, not other players.

Last Saturday we said the last goodbyes to Tarja.

Tuo Vaasan uuden hautausmaan siunauskappeli on kaunis paikka. Iso lasiseinä antaa vieraille arkun taustaksi hienon vuodenaikojen mukaan vaihtuvan luontonäkymän. Samassa salissa käytiin 20 vuotta sitten hyvästelemässä Tarjan isä.

Tarja elää nyt muistoissamme. ❤️

This chapel on the new cemetery of Vaasa is a beautiful space. That big window wall offers guests a lovely nature scenery that changes throughout the year. We participated in her father's funeral 20 years ago in this same place.

Tarja lives now in our hearts. ❤️
