Autoilu Rodoksella ja viimeinen päivä

Torstaina käveltiin aamusta autovuokraamolle ja lähdettiin saarikierrokselle. Ensimmäisenä paikkana oli Filerimoksen kukkula, josta oli upeat näkymät - tässä lentokentän suuntaan. Ainoastaan tuona päivänä oli jokin lakko ja kaikki museokohteet olivat kiinni. Siksi täällä jäi se luostarin puoli katselematta.

On Thursday we headed to the car rental company right after breakfast and started our island round trip. The first stop was at Filerimos hill, which had a great view over the island - here towards the airport. There was a strike on one day and naturally, it was this, hence we couldn't visit the monastery side.

Seuraavaksi ajettiin saaren poikki näköalareittiä ja itärannikkoa pitkin Lindokseen, jossa myös oli Akropoliksen rauniot suljettuna. Käytiin katsomassa maisemia kukkulan reunalta, syötiin lounas kattojen yläpuolella ja kierrettiin katuja.

Next we drove over the hills to the east side of the island and then south to Lindos. Also there the Acropolis ruins were closed due to the strike. We walked uphill to see the view, had a lunch over the roofs and did some alley wandering.

Viimeiseksi pikashoppailukierroksen aikana etsiydyttiin Tarjan kanssa hiljaiseen paikkaan ja laitoin dronen ylös maisemakuvia varten:

Last part of our Lindos visit was general shopping but I and Tarja searched a peaceful place and I sent the drone up for few scenic photos:

Pois lähtiessä näköalapaikalla pysähtyessä saatiin se klassinenkin ryhmäkuva.

On our way back we stopped at a view point and we finally got a traditional group photo.

Päivän lopuksi käytiin vielä uimassa Tsambikan rannalla. Tarjolla olisi ollut vauhtikyytiäkin, mutta snorklailu riitti hyvin.

The last stop of the day was at the Tsambika beach. There was some speedy entertainment available but the basic snorkelling was enough.

Viimeinen koko päivä perjantai aloitettiin lounaalla mainiossa salaattiravintolassa (Tamam) ja käveltiin sen jälkeen taas vanhaan kaupunkiin. Tällä kertaa kierrettiin vallihaudan pohjaa pitkin menevää polkua.

The last full day, Friday got started in Tamam salad restaurant with a very good lunch. Then we walked via the moat 'alley' surrounding the old town.

Keskiviikkona jo suljettuna ollut arkeologinen museo tuli hoidettua nyt. Siellä riittikin paljon kierreltävää.

The archaeological museum was closed on Wednesday but now we got it covered. There was a lot to see.

Tuon jälkeen ajateltiin käydä uimassa kartalla näkyneellä pikkurannalla, mutta se oli oikeastaan liian pieni ja jo varjossakin. Kävelyä ja ottamaan vielä drone-kuvaa tästäkin suunnasta. Me näytään tuossa pikkutornista oikealle olevalla penkillä.

For the end of the day, we were going to have a quick swim on a small beach spotted in maps.me but it was actually too small and already in the shade. So we walked to a peaceful place to get some drone photos. We're that red spot on a bench on the right side.

Viimeisen päivän myötä tuli jo vähän hätä löytää osallistujaa 100 tuntematonta -sarjaani. Rannasta auringonlaskua ihailemasta löytyi onneksi nuoripari Marina ja Giannis.

As it was already our last day on the trip I got a bit worried about finding participants to my 100 strangers project. Fortunately, I found Marina and Giannis watching the sunset in the harbour.

Viimeiselle illalliselle otin perinteistä meksikolaista. Ruoan vaihtelevuuden maksimoimiseksi vaihdettiin taas Tarjan kanssa annosta puolivälissä. 😊

For the last supper I had some traditional mexican. And for maximizing the food experience I and Tarja switched our portions half way the dinner. 😊

Rodoksen välipäivät

Tiistaina oli tarkoitus koko porukalla kiertää saarta vuokra-autolla, mutta sairastumisen takia se siirrettiin kaksi päivää eteenpäin. Aamulepuuttelun jälkeen otettiin pikalounas ja lähdettiin Tarjan + Elsan kanssa katsomaan Akropolista.

On Tuesday we were supposed to do a road trip on the island but one of us got sick so it was delayed for two days. After the morning resting we had a quick lunch and walked with Tarja and Elsa to visit the Rhodes Acropolis. 

Alue olikin täysin avoin kierreltävä paikka ilman mitään lipunmyyntiä. Mukavan rauhallista!

The area was open for everybody without any ticket sales etc. A nice and calm place!

Raunioiden jälkeen lähdettiin kohti kaupunkia kiertotietä, koska siellä oli maps.me:n mukaan lisää nähtävyyksiä. Ensimmäisenä oli luolakirkko - pieni koppero kalliossa ja iso varjoisa oleskelualue edessään. Rauhaisaa oli; seuraava vieras tuli vasta portaissa vastaan, kun lähdettiin pois.

After checking the ruins we headed back to downtown via another road as maps.me app showed that there are more sights. The first one was a cave church - a small room inside the rocks and a big resting area in front of it. Yet another peaceful visit as the next guest arrived when we were leaving.

Tien toisella puolella oli raunioita, mutta niistä ei tullut erityisen hienoa kuvaa, joten vierestä muutama kukka.

On the other side of the road there were more ruins. Not specially photogenic, so instead here are nice flowers from that area:

Lähdettiin takaisin saaren toisella reunalla mäen päällä menevää tietä. Näköalapaikan penkillä oli mukava pitää taas yksi tauko ja ihailla maisemia.

The other side of the island offered a beautiful view from the bench. A great place to have a break and admire the scenery.

Seuraavana päivänä aloitettiin Suurmestareiden palatsilla, jossa riittikin kiertämistä.

The next day was started at the Palace of Grand Masters. There's a lot to see there.

Näyttelyjä oli parissa kerroksessa. Paikka herättää kuulemma paikallisissa ristiriitaisia tunteita, koska se ei ole oikeasti mainostettu ritareiden linna, vaan Mussolinille 30-luvulla rakennettu palatsi. Sisustuksena on aitoja Kossilta tuotuja historiallisia mosaiikkeja ja muuta sen aikaista 'hienoa', mutta omistaja ei koskaan ehtinyt tuolla edes käydä.

Exhibitions were on two floors. The guidebook told that the place is considered controversial as it's actually not a palace of knights, but built on 1930's for Mussolini. The interior is from those days - mosaic floors were taken from nearby island Kos and other fancy things of those days. And the owner had never time/possibility to visit the palace.

Palatsin jälkeen käytiin ensin lipun hintaan kuuluvassa kirkossa ja lopuksi vielä kellotornissa, josta oli mukavat näkymät. Tuo edessä näkyvä ravintola omisti paikan ja pääsylippuun sisältyikin ilmainen drinkki.

After the palace, we visited a church that was included to the ticket. Then the Clock Tower with a nice view over the Old town. The restaurant in front owns the place and ticket price included a free drink.

Syvälle ja korkealle

Maanantaiaamuna lähdettiin Tarjan kanssa mukaan Waterhopperssin snorklaus- / sukellusretkelle Kallithean poukamaan. Firma oli vähän kalliimpi kuin muut kysellyt, mutta toisaalta laivalla oli esim oma lääkäri, joten saakin olla hintavampi.

Tässä alussa pidetty info molemmista sukellusreitistä, käytännöistä ja mitä missäkin tehdään. 

On Monday morning I and Tarja walked to the Waterhoppers boat for a day trip to diving/snorkeling site Kallithea bay. The company was a bit more expensive than others but they had for example a doctor onboard, so it was a good choice.

Edellisestä kerrasta oli lähes kaksi vuotta, joten sääntöjen mukaan piti käydä ensin todistamassa taitonsa. Meni ihan hyvin vanhasta muistista 66 sukelluksen myötä ja pääsin kierrokselle:

It was almost two years since my last scuba dive, so I and two others did first a brief test to show our skills. After 66 dives I remembered the things quite well, so we got to the actual round:

Laiva ankkuroitui ison lautan viereen, josta oli tosi helppo mennä veteen. Jalan takia tuo tuli varmistettua jo retkeä varatessa.

The boat was anchored next to this big platform so entering the water was nice and easy. Because of the leg I remembered to confirm that before booking the trip.

Toisella sukelluksella tuli vastaan sukelluksenopettaja Tiina tämän juniorin kanssa.

On the second dive I met this junior doing the discovery dive with a Finnish teacher Tiina.

Kakkoskierroksella käytiin myös tunnelia pitkin pinnalla ns. ilmareiässä (blowhole), johon kovalla merenkäynnillä aallot lyövät äänekkäästi. 

We also visited a 'blowhole', which makes a sound when the sea is rough. The route there was via a tunnel.

Vesi oli kirkasta (näkyvyys 12m) ja lämmintä (26C), mutta eläimiä tai kasveja ei kovin paljoa näkynyt. Enimmäkseen viherruskehtavaa levää ja eniten näitä tulimatoja. Infossa suositteli välttämään koskettamista, ovat kai eläinmaailman nokkosia.

The visibility was quite good (12m / 13 yards) and water temperature was 26C (79F), but there were not too many animals and corals. Mosty green brownish alga and these fire worms. During the info session it was said that we better not touch them as they sting a bit.

Ja tässä vielä infon karttataulu sukelluspaikasta ja reiteistä. Ensin kierrettiin oikeanpuoleinen vastapäivään ja sitten vasen myötäpäivään. Tuossa näkyy myös sukelluslokiin tarvitut lämpötila, näkyvyys, max syvyydet ja minuutit.

Here's the info map about the dive site and routes. The right route was done first counter-clockwise and then the left one clockwise. It also shows temperature, visibility, max depths and minutes - all of them I marked to my log book.

Laiva palasi satamaan klo 16.30 tienoilla ja jätskien jälkeen kierrettiin hotellin kautta vanhaan kaupunkiin. Alueen takareunalta löytyi suojaisa nurkka, jossa sai laitettua dronen ylös ilman liikoja tuijottelijoita. Tuosta muurin harjalla olisi ollut kiinnostavaa kävellä, muttei siellä näkynyt ihmisiä, joten taitaa olla hankala päästä.

The boat was back at the harbour around 4:40 p.m. We had mandatory ice creams and walked to the Old town via our hotel. A bit of sightseeing and behind the Old town exit we found a sheltered place to send up the drone with not many curious eyes. The top of that wall would had been interesting place to visit, but didn't see anybody there so it's probably a tricky place to reach.

Reissussa bongailen aina hääpareja ja nyt näkyi tuttu mies lauantailta, jolloin oli kirkon edestä muiden juhlavieraiden kanssa. 

Newly wed couples always catch my eye and this guy was two days earlier in front of the church with other guests.

Retkue saapuu Rodokselle

Tammikuussa matkasta sovittaessa vielä kaukaiselta tuntunut lokakuukin tuli ja saatiin hengähdystauko syksystä lämpöisellä Rodoksella.

Hotellilla käynnin jälkeen ensimmäisenä hommana oli lounas - tämä läheltä löytynyt Amalgaami oli ihan hyvä ravintola ja käytiinkin siellä kahdesti.

October felt like it was really far in the future in January when this trip was agreed. But now suddenly it was here and we got a warm Rhodes / Greece break during the Autumn.

The first task after checking in to hotel was lunch. Agalma that was just two blocks away turned out to be a good restaurant and we ate there twice.

Lauantain seuraava homma oli kastaa jalat välimereen. Taustalla näkyy myös miten lähellä Turkin rannikko on.

The next task on Saturday was to dip feet to Mediterranean Sea. The coast line of Turkey is visible in the background.

Veteen pulahduksen jälkeen käveltiin rantoja pitkin. Hyppytorni jäi testaamatta.

After a brief swimming we walked by the shore. Diving tower was not tested.

Neljä aamua aloitettiin valohoidolla hotellimme Best Western Plaza uima-altaalla.

On four mornings we spent few hours relaxing by the pool of our hotel Best Western Plaza.

Sunnuntaina kierrettiin lisää lähikortteleita ja käytiin ensimmäisen kerran Rodoksen vanhassa kaupungissa. Nämä tuulimyllyt olivat vielä sataman reunalla.

On Sunday we explored more streets near the hotel and made the first visit to the Old town of Rhodes. These wind mills were by the harbour though.

Toisen päivän illallinen otettiin kaverin vinkkaamassa Niohori ravintolassa ja sain toimitettua terveiset Eirinille.

The dinner of our second day was in Niohori restaurant which was recommended by a friend. I also got to tell greetings to Eirin.
