Jouluviikot

Taas arkielämään: viikon 52 kuvaksi oli monta vaihtoehtoa joulun kolmesta sukutapaamisesta. Mutta tämä oli tunnelmallisin: lauantain myrsky katkaisi Bergöstä sähköt juuri, kun aloiteltiin Radlands-erää. Onneksi sähköt oli poikki siellä vain nelisen tuntia.

Back to everyday life: for week 52 I had several good candidates for week's photo as we had three family dinners. But this had the most special vibes: we were just starting the Radlands game when the winter storm cut off the electricity from the whole island. Luckily it stayed off for just 4 hrs.

Viikon 1 kuvana uudenvuoden ilotulituksen sijaan ollut valoshow Vaasan kaupungintalolla. Hieno asia, että saastuttava ja vain yhden kerran katseltava ilotulitus on vaihtunut tällaiseen kahdeksasti pyörineeseen esitykseen (video alla).

The photo of week 1 is from the light show that the city arranged instead of fireworks. This was a great replacement for one time polluting money waste as they did this show eight times during the evening, so even kids could see it. (a video below)

Ja sitten muut kahden viikon kuvat: aatonaattona tiistaina mentiin töiden jälkeen Sulvalle Katarinan tyttären luo jouluaterialle ja pukin vierailua seuraamaan.

Then the other photos of the past two weeks: on the 23rd we drove to Sulva after work and had a Christmas meal and Santa visited Katarina's daughter's place.

Jouluaattona tuli mullakin käyttöön ePassilla otetut käyntikerrat Sulvan uudelle gymille. Oltiin ainoat koko salilla. Jännät valokehykset punaisina ja sinisinä siellä.

On the 24th I used my new access pass to Sulva gym. We were the only ones there. They had decorated the gym with nice red and blue light frames.

Tuon jälkeen oltiin Katarinan pojan luona jouluaterialla ja toisen kerran pukkia vastaanottamassa.

After the gym we had a Christmas meal and Santa visited Katarina's son and his family.

Joulupäivä olikin rauhallisin, kun oltiin ihan vain kahdestaan. Tuona päivänä kahdesti pelattu Barrage vei vähän tilaa pöydästä. 

The 25th was the most peaceful day since it was just the two of us. Barrage game that we played twice on that day took quite a lot of table space.

Joulupäivän kävelyllä aallokko oli rikkonut alkaneen jään paloiksi. Vieressä on avantopaikka, mutta toivottavasti kukaan ei uskaltautunut veteen.

We did a walk during the day and watched how strong wind had broken the ice to pieces. Hopefully nobody tried to use the winter swimming place here.

Ja sitten tämä kahdesti pelattu Barrage. Näyttää olevan mun kokoelman raskaimmaksi rankattu peli, mutta on myös arvostettu, koska on maailmanlistalla sijalla 39. Aikamoinen kokemus oli!

Then Barrage, which we played twice on Christmas day. This seems to have the highest complexity of the games in my collection. But it's also very respected as it's #39 in BGG all games list (out of over 23 000 games).

Perjantaina käytiin taas kuntosalilla ja sen jälkeen kiireellä valmistelemaan kolmatta joulua, kun paikalle tuli poika Mikko, mun veljet ja äitee.

On Friday we visited the gym again and then had to hurry up arranging the meal for my mom and my brothers who visited us. And my son Mikko came too.

Mariannella oli aamuvuoroa koko joulu, joten tulivat lastenlasten kanssa toiseen kattaukseen. Puuron jälkeen olikin kolmannen lahjojen jakamisen aika.

My daughter Marianne had to work in a morning shift for the whole Christmas so their family came to the second setting. After the porridge it was time for the third gift exchange.

Äitee oli yötä meillä ja lauantaina Katarinan lähtiessä iltavuoroon olin kuskina Seinäjoelle. Mustasta märästä Vaasasta oli aika yllätys ajaa valkoiseen talveen.

My mom stayed with us overnight and on Saturday when Katarina headed to work for evening shift I drove mom to Seinäjoki. Vaasa was wet and black, so a winter at Seinäjoki was quite a surprise.

Tuon ekan talvimyrskyn jälkeen oli kyllä yllättävää käydä rannassa, kun merenpinta oli laskenut 70 senttiä.

After that winter storm the water level had dropped 70 cm (=27,6") so the shore was quite a surprising scene.

Sunnuntaina menin Mariannen ja lastenlasten kanssa käymään leikkikentällä. 

On Sunday I visited a playing area with Marianne and grandkids.

Uuden vuoden aattona töistä kotiin kävellessä keskusta näytti olevan pilvessä.

Downtown seemed to be inside a cloud when I walked home from work on New Year's Eve.

Oltiin tuolla Elsan kanssa ja sen perään vähän istumaan iltaa. 

We watched the show with Elsa and then headed to my place.

Uuden vuoden päivänä käytiin kävelyllä ja huomasin uuden tyylikkään graffitin.

Viime vuoden pelitilastot. My Cityä tuli eniten, koska pelattiin sen kampanja loppuun - myin jo pelin. Kluster taas on niin helppo ja nopea, että uutena sitä meni monta erää.

The Board game stats of last year. We played My City so many times as we wanted to finish the campaign. Now it's already sold. Kluster is so easy and fast that it got many plays when it was fresh.

Kirstenbosch ja MOCAA

Tästä taas pari päivää Kapkaupunkia. Tiistaina mentiin kierros turistibussien sinisellä linjalla. Alussa näkyi sokeri, pippuri ja suola -rakennukset, joilla ovela rakennusliike oli kiertänyt kaupungin asettaman rinteeseen rakentamisen korkeusrajoituksen.  

Here's again two more days in Cape Town. On Tuesday we took the blue line of Hop-on-hopp-off buses. In the beginning we got a good look at Sugar, Salt and Pepper buildings. These were a clever way to bypass the city's rules of how high to the mountain can buildings be built.

Pöytävuoren toisella puolella ensimmäinen pysäkki oli Kirstenboschin kasvitieteellinen puutarha. Siellä osuttiin juuri 1,5 h opastetulle kierrokselle.

The first stop behind the Table Mountain was Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. There we participated in a 1,5 hrs guided tour.

There was also a separate 'green house' for simulating the desert's dry climate for those plants.

Aina välillä näkyi hökkelikyliä, joista tuli aikamoinen kontrasti varakkaiden huviloihin.

Occasionally we saw townships for poor people. Those are quite a contrast to fancy villas.

Keskustassa on vuonna -77 kesken jääneet maantiesillat, joille mietitään vieläkin käyttöä (yksi ehdotus oli paikallisjuna, jota varten näitä jatkettaisiin). Vielä vähän hienompi näkökulma siltoihin. 

The Foreshore Freeway bridge got stuck to this in 1977. A different view of them. There are also ideas presented how to take them in use, for example as train tracks.

Keskiviikkona aloitettiin kävelemällä MOCAAhan, eli modernin taiteen museoon. Tuolla rakennus teki isoimman wau-efektin. Siitä oli pari kuvaa tässä reissusta tehdyssä pikapostauksessa. 

On Wednesday we walked first to MOCAA i.e. Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. There the building gave us the biggest wow effect. I posted a few pics of that in a quick post I published while on the trip.

Bussilippuun kuului satamaristeilyn lisäksi kanavaristeily, jonne mentiin keskiviikkona päivän lopuksi.

The tourist bus ticket includes two cruises. On Wednesday after the MOCAA we finally took that.

Ei ollut slummia kanavien ympärillä.

Joulun viimeiset arkiviikot

Joulua jo pilkottaa tässä viikon 50 kuvassa. Käytiin Sulvalla katsomassa Lucia-kulkue ja mukana ollut Katarinan lapsenlapsi Nicole. En kyllä muista lapsuudesta Kurikasta paljon Lucia-juttuja, kun taas täällä 80km päässä se on aina kuulunut isona juttuna jouluun.

The photo of week 50 is already showing some Christmas vibes. We checked out the Lucia procession as Katarina's granddaughter is here too. Lucia tradition has always been a big part of Christmas here in the Vaasa area whereas in Kurikka where I grew up I didn't see that much.

Viikon 51 kuvana Elsan luona pidetty alustava joulujuhla. Katarinan nuorin lapsenlapsi Noelle tuli myös mukaan ja tutustui 'pikkuserkkuihin'.

The photo of week 51 is from our first pre-Christmas meeting at Elsa's home. Katarina's youngest grandchild Noelle came also and saw her 'second cousins' for the first time. 

Firman puolesta käytiin syömässä jouluateria Strampenilla. Onhan nämä hyvää vaihtelua, mutta onneksi joulu on vain kerran vuodessa.

We visited Strampen for Christmas lunch with our work team. It was good but also it's good that these happen only once a year.

Hankin vihdoin riittävän pitkän (48m) jouluvaloketjun puun koristukseksi.

I finally purchased a long enough (48 m) light chain for my tree.

Kävelyllä oli jo hetken ihan talvinen meininki.

It looked like winter for a while.

Seuraavana päivänä tuli vielä lisää lunta, mutta pian taas vesisade vei kaiken pois.

And more snow came on the next day, but soon it rained and all snow was gone.

Oma kuusi on just sopiva.

My Christmas tree is just the right size.

Toinen jouluateria tuli vielä töissä koko porukalle. Joulutorttua riitti!

The second Christmas lunch was at our work restaurant and there were enough tarts.

Uusista peleistä pöytään pääsi Russian Railroads, joka oli maineensa veroinen mainio peli! Helppo oppia, mutta vaihtoehtoja ja miettimistä riitti. Tämä oli siis taas enemmän Katarinan aluetta.

The new game of the week was Russian Railroads, which was good as it's been said to be. Easy to learn but a lot of options and thinking. This was again more in Katarina's territory.

Vuoden pimein päivä ei ollut oikeasti pimein. Mökiltä lautalla palatessa aurinko edelleen kirkasti maisemia. 

The darkest day of the year wasn't actually the darkest. On my drive from the cottage the Sun gave a nice sunset light in the ferry.

Kapkaupungin alkupäivät

Perille Kapkaupunkiin pääsyn päivänä otettiin rauhallisesti, koska saatiin vain noin tunti unta matkayönä. Käytiin ruokakaupassa ja lepäiltiin kämpässä. Alkuillasta sentään haettiin naapuritalon ravintolasta iltaruoka. 

Once we arrived in Cape Town we took it slowly since we got only about an hour of sleep during the night trip. We visited a shop to fill the fridge and hung out in our apartment. For the evening we walked to the other side of the street to pick up dinner.

Tuo kämppä oli hyvä löytö: toistasataa € halvempi kuin muut vastaavat, käytettävissä uima-allas ja parkkihallipaikka, oma pyykinpesukone ja kunnon keittiö. Talo oli vanha vakuutusyhtiön konttori, jossa kerroskorkeus oli niin iso, että sisällä oli portaat yläkerran makkariin.

That apartment was a great find: over hundred € cheaper than other similar ones. We could use a swimming pool and parking hall. There was a washing machine and a proper kitchen. It was an old insurance company office and the floor height was big enough to have a bedroom upstairs.

Sunnuntaina käytiin kävellen kurkkaamassa V&A Waterfronttia ja yleisesti kaupunkia. Sitten ma-ke meillä oli lippu turistibussiin, niin pääsi kiertämään nähtävyydet helposti ja auto sai pysyä hallissa. 

On Sunday we walked to V&A Waterfront to check out it and downtown in general. Then for Mon-Wed we had tickets for the Hop-on-hop-off tourist bus so that we could get to all tourist places easily and could keep the car in the parking hall.

Maanantain eka kohde oli Pöytävuori. Moni muukin oli keksinyt saman ja jonotettiin 80 minuuttia gondoliin. Paria tuntia myöhemmin olisi saanut kävellä suoraan sinne.

On Monday our first destination was Tabletop Mountain. Many others had the same idea and we stood in a queue for 80 minutes. About two hours later we could have walked directly in the gondola.

Tuolta avautuvat näkymät on kyllä hienot! Tässä jalkapallon MM-kisoja varten tehty stadion. 

The view was amazing! Below is the DHL Stadium which was built for the football World Championships. 

Zoomaus V&A Waterfrontille, jossa bussilipunkin takia pyörittiin monena päivänä.

Sitten Afrikan vanhin puisto, eli 'Firman puutarha', jonka oikeassa takanurkassa on parlamenttitalo. Meidän talo oli siitä laskettuna toinen 'koiliseen'.

Then the oldest park in Africa i.e. The Company's Garden. On the right corner behind is the Parliament. And our building the second from that "towards 2 o'clock".

Pöytävuoren päällä oli rauhalliset polut bongailla eläimiä ja käydä katsomassa toiselle puolelle.

Tabletop Mountain had nice paths to walk around to see animals and the views to the other side.

Bussi jatkoi kierrosta ja palasi Signal-kukkulan länsipuolta, jonka alkaessa näkyi takana 'apostolit', eli nämä vuorenhuiput.

The bus route returned back to downtown behind the Signal hill. In the beginning of that part we saw 'the Apostles' (=the mountain peaks) behind us.

Kierroksen jälkeen ehdittiin vielä hintaan sisältyvään satamaristeilyyn.

After the round we had time to participate in the Harbour cruise, which was included in the price.

Takaisin tullessakin sai ihailla Pöytävuoren päälle päivän aikana ilmaantunutta 'pöytäliinaa'.

And also on our walk back we could admire the 'table cloth' that had appeared during the day.
