Valashain jäljillä

Kotiinlähtöpäivänä meille oli myöhäisen saapumisen takia kuljetuskin vasta klo 16 jälkeen. Onneksi saatiin aamuksi vielä paikat valashai-retkelle, joten normaali laukkujen vieressä odottelu ei niin toteutunutkaan, vaan saatiin koko rahan edestä kokemuksia.

Hotellilla täytettiin vastuuvapauslomakkeet ja käveltiin satamaan, jossa retken vetäjä selitti säännöt ja turvaohjeet:

On the day of our departure, we had transport to the airport island around 4 p.m. so we booked a Whale shark trip for that morning. Hence we avoided that normal waiting by the luggage and got one of the best experiences of the whole trip!

First, at the hotel lobby, we filled the disclaimer forms and then walked to the harbour where our guide explained the rules and safety instructions:

Mennessä näkyi jo delfiinejä, mutta ajettiin suoraan läheisen saaren toiselle reunalle, jossa oli valashaita näkynyt edellisenäkin päivänä.

Vedessä ensimmäisellä kerralla oli pahin ryysis, kun kaikki uivat epätoivoisesti valashain perässä. Oppaan vinkki oli pitää toista kättä edessään pään suojana. Hyvä neuvo!

Already on our way towards the Whale shark spot, we saw some dolphins. The boat headed to shore by next island's, where they had seen Whale shark also the day before.

At the first time, the rush was the worst, everybody tried to keep up with the fish. Guide's advice to keep the other hand in front to protect your head was a good hint!

Tuossa ylemmässä kuvassa kala oli ehkä oikeimman värinen. Tämän seuraavan sain sukeltamalla hiukan alemmas samalla kun valashai oli pysähtynyt hetkeksi.

The photo above has almost the right colours. The next shot I got by diving a bit down while the Whale shark stopped for a while.

Perässä pysymisen teki välillä rankaksi se, että valashai ui yleensä vastavirtaan saadakseen planktonin mahdollisimman hyvin haaviin. Vaikka muut näyttävät olevan lähellä, niin kukaan ei koskenut kalaan. Ohjeissa vähimmäisetäisyydeksi sanottiin kolme metriä, koska kuulemma sen iho on jotenkin herkkä ja eivät tule pariin päivään samaan paikkaan kosketuksen jälkeen.

Paikalla oli 5-6 venettä ja kuskit näyttivät toisilleen valashain suuntaa, joten kukin sai aina ajaa vähän sen edelle ja porukat hyppäsivät veteen. Tämä tehtiin kolmesti. Viimeisellä kerralla valashaita meni lähes peräkkäin kaksi, joten kun toinen karkasi kauas, niin toinen tuli kohdalle.

Keeping the pace with the Whale shark required some effort as they swim against the current to harvest as much plankton as possible. And even though in the pics people seem to be close to it, nobody touched it. Instructions were to keep a minimum 3 m (9ft) distance because its skin was said to be sensitive and they will not return for a couple of days to the place where they are hurt.

There were about 5-6 boats and the guides showed each other the direction of the Whale shark. Boats drove ahead of fish and tourists jumped to the ocean. This was done three times. On the last round, there were two Whale sharks so when the first one got too far, we could see the second one approaching.
