Kapkaupungin alkupäivät

Perille Kapkaupunkiin pääsyn päivänä otettiin rauhallisesti, koska saatiin vain noin tunti unta matkayönä. Käytiin ruokakaupassa ja lepäiltiin kämpässä. Alkuillasta sentään haettiin naapuritalon ravintolasta iltaruoka. 

Once we arrived in Cape Town we took it slowly since we got only about an hour of sleep during the night trip. We visited a shop to fill the fridge and hung out in our apartment. For the evening we walked to the other side of the street to pick up dinner.

Tuo kämppä oli hyvä löytö: toistasataa € halvempi kuin muut vastaavat, käytettävissä uima-allas ja parkkihallipaikka, oma pyykinpesukone ja kunnon keittiö. Talo oli vanha vakuutusyhtiön konttori, jossa kerroskorkeus oli niin iso, että sisällä oli portaat yläkerran makkariin.

That apartment was a great find: over hundred € cheaper than other similar ones. We could use a swimming pool and parking hall. There was a washing machine and a proper kitchen. It was an old insurance company office and the floor height was big enough to have a bedroom upstairs.

Sunnuntaina käytiin kävellen kurkkaamassa V&A Waterfronttia ja yleisesti kaupunkia. Sitten ma-ke meillä oli lippu turistibussiin, niin pääsi kiertämään nähtävyydet helposti ja auto sai pysyä hallissa. 

On Sunday we walked to V&A Waterfront to check out it and downtown in general. Then for Mon-Wed we had tickets for the Hop-on-hop-off tourist bus so that we could get to all tourist places easily and could keep the car in the parking hall.

Maanantain eka kohde oli Pöytävuori. Moni muukin oli keksinyt saman ja jonotettiin 80 minuuttia gondoliin. Paria tuntia myöhemmin olisi saanut kävellä suoraan sinne.

On Monday our first destination was Tabletop Mountain. Many others had the same idea and we stood in a queue for 80 minutes. About two hours later we could have walked directly in the gondola.

Tuolta avautuvat näkymät on kyllä hienot! Tässä jalkapallon MM-kisoja varten tehty stadion. 

The view was amazing! Below is the DHL Stadium which was built for the football World Championships.

Sitten Afrikan vanhin puisto, eli 'Firman puutarha', jonka oikeassa takanurkassa on parlamenttitalo. Meidän talo oli siitä laskettuna toinen 'koiliseen'.

Then the oldest park in Africa i.e. The Company's Garden. On the right corner behind is the Parliament. And our building the second from that "towards 2 o'clock".

Pöytävuoren päällä oli rauhalliset polut bongailla eläimiä ja käydä katsomassa toiselle puolelle.

Tabletop Mountain had nice paths to walk around to see animals and the views to the other side.

Bussi jatkoi kierrosta ja palasi Signal-kukkulan länsipuolta, jonka alkaessa näkyi takana 'apostolit', eli nämä vuorenhuiput.

The bus route returned back to downtown behind the Signal hill. In the beginning of that part we saw 'the Apostles' (=the mountain peaks) behind us.

Kierroksen jälkeen ehdittiin vielä hintaan sisältyvään satamaristeilyyn.

After the round we had time to participate in the Harbour cruise, which was included in the price.

Takaisin tullessakin sai ihailla Pöytävuoren päälle päivän aikana ilmaantunutta 'pöytäliinaa'.

And also on our walk back we could admire the 'table cloth' that had appeared during the day.

Paluu arkeen

Tässä taas parin viikon kuvat. Viikon 48 kuva Suomi-Amerikka yhdistyksen vuosikokouksesta, johon osallistumiseen ajoitin paluun onnistumaan.

Here are the photos of the previous two weeks. The photo of week 48 is from Finland-USA association's yearly meeting. I timed our return so that I could participate in it.

Viikon 49 kuvana mukava maisema, kun sain taas perjantaivapaat pyörimään ja ennen lapsenlapsen Artturin viemistä uimahalliin, kävin pitkästä aikaa juoksulenkillä. Aurinkoa näkyi!

Week 49's photo is a nice scenery on my free Friday's jogging. The sun was visible! After this I took my grandson Artturi to the swimming hall.

Toissa viikon maanantaina oltiin vielä paluumatkalla ja Dohan kohdalla sai jännät näkymät lennon aluksi.

On Monday two weeks ago we were still on our way back to Finland and got this cool view at Doha when starting the last flight.

Reissussa kerittiin pelaamaan ihan hyvin. Tuo Rival Cities oli 1902:n lisäksi toinen uutuus mukana ja se kyllä iski. Oli selvästi Katarinan aluetta, kun tilanne nyt 1-6, mutta mainio peli! Perustuu 1500-luvulla tapahtuneeseen Hampurin ja Altonan kalastajakylien kilpailuun. 

We played quite a lot during those 22 days. The new games were Rival Cities and 1902 Méliès. The first one was a real hit. It was clearly more Katarina's game as the wins are now 1-6, but I still liked it. It's based on a 16th century rivalry between two fishing villages: Hamburg and Altona.

Katarinan syntymäpäivä tapahtui eteläisellä pallonpuoliskolla, joten paluun jälkeen pidettiin muutamat kutsut asiasta. Ensin Roy perheineen.

Katarina's birthday happened during our trip so after returning home we had a few sessions to celebrate afterwards. First son Roy & family.

Tähän väliin tuolta Bank Food & Wine paikasta baaritiski. Paikan sisätilatkin on suojeltu, joten eivät saa muuttaa tämän vanhan Osakepankin sisätiloja.

Perjantaina tuli käytyä testaamassa ja kuvauttamassa silmiä, kun toisessa on paine lähtenyt nousuun. Ei löytynyt vikaa, joten seurantaa vaan.

On Friday I had time to check my eyes due to the increased pressure on my left eye. Nothing was found so I just need to keep following the situation.

Lauantaina vietettiin meillä toiset synttärikutsut Katarinan tyttärelle perheineen.

The second birthday party was on Saturday for Katarina's daughter along with her family.

Ja sitten sunnuntaina vielä kolmannet mun perillisille.

And then on Sunday the third session for my heirs.

Reissun aikana oli henkilöstöruokalaan tullut mainio uudistus! Oma vegelinjasto, jossa kaks lämmintä ruokaa. 

During our trip the company lunch restaurant had done a good new thing! An own line for vegetarian / vegan food with two warm options.

Joulun / pimeän valosarja alkaa töihin kävellessä bongatulla varastopuolen ikkunalla. 

The Christmas / dark season light series begins with Wärtsilä warehouse windows.

Toisena naapuritalon iso kuusi joka vuotisissa valoissaan.

The second one is the neighbour's big Christmas tree.

Meidän taloyhtiössä ovat hankkineet pyöreisiin ikkunoihin hienot täydennykset. Mullakin tuli laitettua muovikuusi pystyyn jo 29.11. mutta siitä otettua kuvaa ei näkynytkään nyt.

The owners of our housing company's round windows have this nice star there. I also set up my plastic tree on Nov 29th but it seems that I've lost its photo.

Ja Onkilahden näkymä, josta puuttuukin nyt kakkostehdas ekaa kertaa mun 41 Vaasassa elovuoden aikana. Neljä vuotta sitten se vielä heijasteli näin.

The Onkilahti view is now missing Wärtsilä's factory #2 for the first time in my 41 years in Vaasa. Four years ago it looked like this.

Pelattavia kertyy nopeammin kuin ehtii korkata uusia, mutta ainakin tämä Gentes oli taas hyvä hiukan erilainen peli! 

I've got games faster than we can handle but at least this Gentes was again a really good and a bit different game!

Itsenäisyyspäivänä tehtiin kierros läheisten hautojen kautta. Osuttiin virallisen lippusaattueen kohdalle.

On the independence day we walked via the loved ones at the cemetery. And happened to see the official salute of the day.

Pitäisi selvittää missä vanhalla hautausmaalla tässä käydäänkään. 

They had representatives of the army and Vaasa city in that procession.

Illaksi mentiin Sulvalle Katarinan luo ja jäi nyt pelit välistä, kun tuli seurattua Linnan juhlia (oman läppärin ohessa) (aamulla toki uusintana erä tuota Gentesiä).

That evening we went to Katarina's place. And missed playing for the evening as we watched Finland's official independence party (along with my laptop) (we played Gentes again in the morning though). 

Sunnuntaina oli vielä yhdet synttärit - Seinäjoella veljenpojan Väinön. Samalla reissulla käytiin ensin äiteen luona.

On Sunday we had one more birthday party. We visited Seinäjoki first at my mother and then together my brother who's son had a birthday.

Hyväntoivonniemi - Cape of Good Hope

Etelä-Afrikan reissusta riittää vielä monta juttua. Saapumislauantaita seuraavana torstaina ajettiin auto pois hallista ekan kerran ja tehtiin retki Hyväntoivonniemelle.

There's a lot of stories to be told about our South Africa trip. On Thursday we started the car for the first time since our arrival on Saturday and made a trip to Cape of Good Hope.

Ajoreitti meni välillä rantaa pitkin, sitten taas sisämaahan niemen poikki (kartalla näin).

The route passed beaches and then inland as we drove through the peninsula (the link to map).

Niemen eteläkärki on luonnonpuistoa ja käytiin ekaksi katsomassa näyttely. Olikin paljon tyylikkäämpi nyt kuin 10 vuotta sitten.

The tip of the cape is a Nature park and we first went to see the exhibition. It was much more modern now than 10 years ago.

Perillä aloitettiin lounaalla. Ravintola oli vielä lähes tyhjä, niin saatiin paras pöytä.

Once there we started with lunch. The restaurant was nearly empty, so we got the best table.

Nykyään keskuksesta ylös majakan luo oli oikein funikulaari. Hienot maisemat tuolta olikin.

Nowadays there's a funicular going up to the lighthouse. Great views from up here!

Tuo niemenkärki oli vielä majakasta etelään. Tuolla on tuulen keskinopeus 30km/h (=8 m/s), joten tyyntä ei taida olla ikinä.

Those rocks of the peninsula are the southernmost tip of the cape. There the average wind speed is 8 m/s (= 26 ft/s ?) so it's always windy.

Siitä jatkettiin Simonin kaupunkiin, matkalla näkyi taas paviaaneja. 

From there we continued to Simon's town and saw baboons on our way.

Suurin osa matkaa mentiin vuoren ja meren välissä, oli nättiä!

Most of the trip was driving between mountains and sea, so pretty!

Boulder's rannalla on pingiiniyhdyskunta. Viimeksi käydessä ei ollut sisäänpääsymaksua, turistitungoksia eikä kävelyteitä, suoraan vain rannalle pingviinien väliin. Näillä porukkamäärillä nykykäytäntö on kuitenkin hyvä!

Boulder's beach has a penguin colony. Last time I visited there it was just a walk from the parking place to the beach and between the penguins. Now there were tourist buses, entrance fees and built walking paths. But with these crowds it's good!

Paluumatkalla ajettiin Chapman's Peak tietä, joka oli maksullinen näköalareitti kallion kylkeen louhittuna. Alkupäässä oli ensin hieno rantanäkymä.

We took the return route via Chapman's Peak Drive. It's a toll road that goes almost on top of the sea with great views. We started it with a beautiful beach scene.

Tie mutkitteli ja onneksi oli aina välillä paikkoja kuskinkin hypätä kuvaamaan maisemia.

The road had several curves and luckily there were many places for the driver to jump out to photograph the scenery.

Viimeinen viikko Etelä-Afrikassa

Viime viikko meni Addo elefanttipuistossa ja ajaessa sieltä takaisin länteen paluuta varten. Viikon 47 kuvana elefantti, joita nähtiin oikein sydämen kyllyydestä.

The photo of week 47 is naturally an elephant. The reason being that we started the week in Addo Elephant National Park and the rest of the week we spent driving back to the West. 

Tehtiin kolmen päivän aikana neljä ajelua koko ajan pidentäen kestoa. Alueella on max nopeus 40 km/h, mutta käytännössä eläimiä bongaillessa tuli ajettua 20 km/h. Siinä ehti katsella ympärille, pelotti vähemmän eläimiä ja sai pysähdyttyä nopeasti kun näki jotain.

We did four safari rides during the three days we spent there and each was longer than the previous one. The speed limit is 40 km/h (25 mph) but in practice we did half of that. When driving slowly there's more time to look for animals, you don't scare them and braking is easier. 

Monenlaista mykkää luontokappaletta nähtiinkin. Tuo bongailu oli jotenkin koukuttavaa. Leijonia oli joku uima-altaalla oleva tyyppi nähnyt kaukaa, mutta kun kuulemma kuusi leijonaa on tuolla 60 km2 alueella, niin tuuria vaati.

A lot of different animals were spotted. It was a fun activity. Some guy we saw at the swimming pool had seen lions from far away, but that required luck as there's six lions in that 60 square km area.

Toisena aamuna tehtiin kunnon eväät mukaan ja syötiin aamupala norsuja katsellen. Lähdettiin matkaan aina klo 6 jälkeen, koska auringonnousun tienoilla on vielä viileintä ja eläimet liikkuvat paremmin.

We did a proper packed breakfast for our second morning drive and ate it while watching elephants. We started always after 6 a.m. as right after sunrise it is still cool and animals are moving more than around midday.

Puhveli on yksi 'ison vitosen' eläimistä leijonan, norsun ja muiden ohella, koska on yksi savannin vaarallisimmista eläimistä.

Buffalo is one of Big Five animals along with lion and elephant because it's one of the most dangerous animals in the savanna.

Tiistain aamupala syötiin autossa juomapaikalla, joka oli tehty sähköjohdoilla norsuille epämiellyttäväksi. Muuten häätävät muita eläimiä pois. Täällä oli paljon seeproja ja yksi strutsi.

We ate Tuesday's breakfast in the car at a water hole which was electrified to be uncomfortable for elephants. Otherwise they don't let other animals drink. Here we saw several zebras and an ostrich.

Tiistaina osuttiin lopuksi kunnon kokoontumisajoon, tässä näkyy vain paikalta pois lähteviä norsuja, mutta paikalla oli varmaan 40-50 norsua. 

At the end of Tuesday we found a big get-together of elephants. Here's only leaving elephants but there must have been at least 40-50 of them.

Keskiviikkona posotettiin reissun pisin ajo - 384 km Oudtshoorniin. Tässä oli jo helppo ajaa ja katsella maisemia, mutta päivä aloitettiin 30km karmivaa kuoppatietä, kun tuli valittua lyhin reitti. Säästettiin sentään kolme kilsaa. 

On Wednesday we had to leave and did the longest drive of the trip - 384 km (239 mi). Here it was easy to enjoy the views but we started the day with 30 km (19 mi) of nasty bumpy roads. But at least we saved 3 km (2 mi)

Ennen näitä tuli myös 35 km pätkä yksikaistaista täryyttävää betonitietä. Molempia sormus ehdotteli myöhemmin talletettavaksi treeniksi, kun oli mies tärissyt niin kauan. Mutta maisemia riitti myös täällä sisämaassa.

Before these nice parts there was also a 35 km (22 mi) part of one lane concrete road, which was so bumpy that my ring asked what workout I did. But at least we had nice views also here inland. 

Robertsonissa tuli taas esille pienten majapaikkojen mukavuus. Hotellit ovat aika samanlaisia, mutta pikkupaikoissa saa juttelua ja huoneet ovat isompia + persoonallisia. Tässä meidän emäntä, jonka kanssa juteltiin pitkään juuristaan Norjassa.

Our stay in Robertson reminded us why smaller places are nice to visit. Hotels are usually identical but in smaller places we get to know people and rooms are bigger + personal. Here's our host with whom we chatted a long time about her roots in Norway.

Viimeiset kaksi yötä oltiin Stellenboschin pienimmällä viinitilalla Lovanella. Majoituksen hintaan sisältyi viininmaistelu, joka päivitettiin erilaisten suklaiden kanssa tehtäväksi.

The last two nights we spent in Lovane which is the smallest wine yard in Stellenbosch. A wine tasting was included in the accommodation and we updated it to be done with chocolate.

Lähtöpäivänä käytiin ennen lentokentälle ajamista Helderbergin suojelualueella kävelemässä parin kilometrin ringin, että saatiin ulkoilua ja rauhaa. 

On the day of our departure we did some hiking in Helderberg nature reserve. A nice place and great views to walk two+ kilometres.
