New York, New York

Aloitus New Yorkissa on mukavan helppo tapa orientoitua ulkomailla olemiseen. Ollaan otettu päivät rauhallisesti, eli valitaan pari samalla suunnalla olevaa kohdetta, jotka katsellaan omaan tahtiin. Esim eilen aloitettiin menemällä The Book of Mormon -näytelmän teatterin eteen osallistumaan päivän lippuarvontaan ja nyt kolmannella kerralla (yritettiin pari vuotta sitten kahdesti Lontoossa) onnisti. Saatiin liput 2 x $32 ja olivat vieläpä kolmosriville. Mahtavan hauska show! Suosittelemme!

Staying New York is an easy nice way to orientate to living outside of Finland. We've taken days slowly and picked for each day few things in the same area and looked them in our own pace. For example yesterday we first participated to ticket lottery of The Book of Mormon. We did it twice in London, but now we were lucky and won! ^^ $64 for two ticket on the third row! Amazing musical! Highly recommended!

In addition to above mentioned ticket lottery, here are few other tips:

MetroCard

Liikkumiseen on kätevintä ostaa metroaseman automaatista Metrocard. Hinta $31, voi maksaa myös luottokortilla ja sillä saa mennä rajattomasti viikon metrolla ja busseilla. Maksaa itsensä jo kahdella päivittäisellä kulkemisella.

For transportation the top tip is to buy a Metrocard. It can be bought with a credit card. Price is $31 and it gives you unlimited subway and bus rides for a week. It pays back already with two daily rides.

Jersey City

Otimme majoituksen nyt Brooklynistä, josta VRBO:n kautta löytyi kunnon tilava kaksio kahden metroaseman läheltä kohtuuhintaan. Useimmat nähtävyydet ovat kuitenkin Manhattanilla, joten sinne mennessä istutaan päivittäin metrolla yhteensä ainakin kaksi tuntia! Yritettiin ensin kämppää, joka on Jersey Cityn puolella ja seuraavan kerran asutaan kyllä siellä: PATH-junilla pääsee keskelle Manhattania 20 minuutissa ja tarjolla myös pikalauttayhteys näköalalla, paikkakin on modernimpi ja siistimpi kuin NYC. Lisäksi ruuan myyntivero on n 5% alempi, joten ruokalaskussa säästää hyvin.

Our accomodation is in Brooklyn, as we found via VRBO a nice 2-room apartment for a good price near two subway stations. Most of the sights are in Manhattan though, so on days that we go there we find us sitting in subway for over two hours! I hope our first try of a place in Jersey City would had succeeded; next time we'll stay there. With PATH trains/busses it's easy to get to Manhattan in 20 minutes and for nice views there's also fast ferry available. City is more modern and cleaner than NYC. Also sales tax for food is about 5% lower.

MoMA

MoMA eli Museum of Modern Art tarjoaa ilmaiskäynnin perjantai-iltaisin. Jono on satoja metrejä pitkä, joten kannattaa ottaa ilmaisliput etukäteen täältä. Ne saa tilattua jopa txtarina suomalaiseenkin numeroon. Hyvä näyttely, mutta tungokseen kannattaa varautua.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) offers Free Friday, which is really nice because the collection is good. Queue is very long though, so you'll save a lot of time by ordering free tickets from here. They send those even to foreign mobile phones. Unfortunately this doesn't save you of the rush inside.


Guggenheim

'Ilmaispäivä' Guggenheimiin on lauantaisin, eli silloin saa maksaa mitä haluaa. Me annettiin yhteensä kymppi, joka oli suosituksena. Paikka oli ihan hintansa väärtti. Jonotus alkaa klo 17 tienoilla ja sisään aletaan ottamaan 17.45. Olimme paikalla 17.15 ja jo silloin jonoa oli pari sataa metriä. Ajan edetessä jono ainakin tuplaantui, mutta kun sisäänotto alkoi, se liikkui nopeasti. Näyttely ei ollut niin hieno kuin MoMA:ssa, mutta rakennus on mahtava ja käynti kannatti.

On Saturdays Guggenheim has a pay-what-you-want evening. We paid the suggested $10 for both of us. They start to take people in 5:45pm but queueing starts around 5pm. There's a LOT of people, but when the line started to move people got inside quite quickly. Current display wasn't as good as in MoMA, but the building is really worth seeing and we can recommend this too.
