Florida revisited

Viime syksyinen maailmanympärimatka alkoi vajaalla kuuden viikon Pohjois-Amerikka osuudella. Siitä viisi vietettiin ao. kartan maisemissa pohjoisessa ja viimeinen kartan ulkopuolella Floridassa Daytona Beachilla (3 yötä) ja Orlandossa (3 yötä). Floridan ajot löytyvät tästä Google-kartasta.

Our trip around the world last Autumn started with a six week period in North America. Five of those we spent on area shown in this map and the last week in Florida. There we had three nights in Daytona Beach and three nights in Orlando. Driving route in Florida can be found here in Google maps.

Oheisen kartan reitiltä on kuvia Flickrissä melko hyvin, pitää vielä jossain vaiheessa saada juttuja tänne blogiinkin asti. Tässä merkinnässä kerrotaan tarkemmin Floridan osuudesta.

Orlandon kentältä otettiin vuokralle Toyota Prius ja ajettiin vähäkulutuksisesti 111 kilometria Daytona Beachille Roomba Inn and Suites hotellille. Paikka oli muutama sata metriä etelään tästä rantakävelytien loppupäästä. Meneillään oli selvästi hiljaisempi aika, kun näin päivinä menossa ei ollu Nascar-kilpa-ajoja.

There's quite many published pics in my Flickr of places in that map's route, but need to get something of them to this blog too. Anyway, this article is about our week in Florida.

We rented a Toyota Prius from Orlando airport and drove 69 miles with low consumption to Roomba Inn and Suites in Daytona Beach. The place is a block south of the end of the beach broadwalk (pic below). It was clearly a peaceful time as there were no Nascar rallies going on at these days.

Seuraavana päivänä käytiin ensin The Casements historiallisessa kohteessa, joka on ollut John Rockefellerin talviasuntona ja lopuksi eläkeasuntonakin. Kun opas kuuli meidän olevan Suomesta, niin pyysi odottamaan vartin ja saatiinkin esittely suomeksi USAssa 28 vuotta asuneelta Annalta.

Lisäksi käveltiin vähän rannalla, Tarja otti aurinkoa minkä aikana kävin parturissa ja illalla pelattiin kierros Congo minigolf-radalla (oli kyllä hienoin näkemämme, kuva Flickrissä).

On the next day we first visited The Casements historic site, where John D. Rockefeller spent his winters and later his retirement years. When they heard that we're from Finland we got a tour by Anna, who had moved to USA 28 years ago and she gave us the presentation in Finnish.

In addition to that we did some walking on the shore, Tarja relaxed by the pool and I had a haircut. Later we took a round in Congo Minigolf, which was the fanciest one we've ever seen (a photo in Flickr).

Toisena päivänä käytiin saaren eteläpäässä olevalla museoalueella, jonka majakasta näkyi hienot näkymät USAn tasaisimman osavaltion yli. Flickristä löytyy myös kuva museon valtavista majakka-prismoista, joilla ohjattiin kaikki lampun valo samaan suuntaan. Sen jälkeen lounas rannassa ja hyönteismyrkyn osto Etelä-Amerikkaa ja Zikaa varten.

We started the second day by visiting Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse museum, which offered beautiful scenery over the flattest state of USA. There was also a very interesting display explaining and showing how the light in lighthouses is enhanced with prisms (a pic in Flickr). After that we had a lunch and visited a store for insect repellent for South America and Zika.

Lopuksi vielä rentoutumista hotellilla ja illan kävelyllä osuttiin kauden viimeisen ilmaiskonsertin alkuun. Saatiinkin kunnon annos Pink Floydin musiikkia.

Then a moment of relaxation at the hotel and during our evening walk we happened to walk to the last free open-air concert of the season. We heard a nice collection of Pink Floyd covers.

Orlandoon palatessa käytiin Blue Spring / Sininen lähde luonnonpuistossa. Ao. kuvan aukosta virtaa 390 000 kuutiometriä vettä päivässä ja paikka vetää manaatteja varsinkin talvella. Meidän kohdallemme osui vain yksi siellä käydessämme, siitä kuva Flickrissä. Uimaan mennessä näkyi viimeiset suomalaiset pariin kuukauteen, kun Floridassa asuva suomalaisnainen kahden poikansa kanssa oli myös uimassa. Pojat olivat hiukan täpinässä, kun saivat puhua suomea vieraille.

On our return to Orlando we visited Blue Spring State Park. 103 millions gallons of water comes every day from the hole in photo below. There are manatees mostly during winter, but during our visit we saw only one (a pic in Flickr). A Florida based Finnish lady with her two sons were also swimming. They our last Finns for two months. Guys were quite excited as they could speak Finnish to strangers.

Orlandon kahdeksi täyspäiväksi otettiin liput Universal Studiolle, jossa on kaksi puolta kierreltävänä. Alla Harry Potter -teemainen kuoro, joka lopetti esityksen oudosti kesken.

In Orlando we bought a two day ticket to Universal Studios to explore the two areas. Below a Harry Potter themed choir which ended their show strangely short.

Suurin osa huvipuistolaitteista oli sisätiloissa pyöriviä osaksi virtuaalitodellisuutta hyödyntäviä, mutta oli siellä vielä muutama klassinenkin kieputin. Alla menossa Hulk-radan vaunu, joka käytiin ajamassa ainakin kolmesti.

Most of the rides are indoor virtual reality based ones, but there are still a couple of classical rides too. Below is the Hulk roller coaster, that we tested at least three times.

Erilaisia Universalin hahmoja riitti laitteissa teeman luojaksi ja alueella kuvauttamassa itseään vieraiden kanssa. Blues Brothers-show, Marvelin supersankareita, Simpsonit, Harry Potterin maailmaa, Shrek, Marilyn Monroe (!?), ao. Beetlejuice ja monta muuta. 

There were several Universal characters for ride themes and posing around the area for a selfie with guests. A Blues Brothers show, Marvel superheroes, The Simpsons, Harry Potter world, Shrek, Marilyn Monroe (?!), Beetlejuice (below) and many others.

Toisena päivänä mentiin puistoon kävelemisen sijasta autolla, koska meillä oli liput samalla alueella olevan Blue Man Groupin iltanäytökseen. Alunperin kaavailtiin Cirque Du Soleilia, jolla on myös kiinteä teatteri Orlandossa, mutta tämä oli mahtavan hauska ja komea vaihtoehto! Kannattaa käydä katsomassa - jatkossa sille voi olla paremmin tilaisuuksiakin, kun tuolta wikistä huomasin, että Cirque on ostanut tämän tässä kuussa.

On the second day we drove to park instead of walking as we had tickets to late night Blue Man Group show on the area. Originally we planned to see Cirque Du Soleil, which also has own theatre in Orlando area, but this was a very good alternative: funny and amazing! Highly recommended! I just noticed from that wikipage that Cirque has bought BMG, so probably there will be more shows in Europe too.

Makrotex-haaste: Marja

Blogi on ollut aika hiljaisena nyt heinäkuussa muiden hommien takia, mutta on se osaksi laiskuuttakin. Uusin Makrotex-haaste on hyvä keino aktivoitua - aiheena on tällä kertaa 'marja'. Tuolta linkin takaa löytyy lisää lähikuvia.

I haven't been very active on blogging in July, partly for other errands, but also due to laziness.The latest Macro photography challenge is a nice way to get active: subject this week is 'berry'. There are more close up pics behind the link above.

Talomme edessä on Aronia-koristepuita, joihin tulee joka syksy ylipaljo marjoja. Vaikka niitä on katseltu jo 13 vuotta, niin vasta pari vuotta sitten anoppi mainitsi noiden marjojen olevan syötäviä. Ja ovat tosiaan aikalailla mustaherukan makuisia. Tarja ei niistä pidä, joten keräsin vain pari laatikkoa pakastimeen jogurttia varten ja ohimennessä syön aina jokusen.

There are couple of Aronia trees in front of our house, and they produce a lot of berries every Autumn. Even though we have lived here over 13 years, just couple of years ago my mother in law mentioned that they are edible. They taste a bit like blackcurrant, but as Tarja doesn't like them I've save just couple of boxes to freezer for yoghurt and eat few whenever I pass the trees.

Tämän kuukauden aiheena Instagram Travel Thursdayssa on lähimatkailu, eli oma kotiseutu. Huomasin, että useissa Vaasan instakuvissani näkyy meri ja kaikki tähän valikoituneet ovatkin sellaisia.

Asutaan sisäsataman vieressä ja jäiden lähtö tapahtuu yleensä vaivihkaa öisin, mutta tällä kertaa satuin kohdalle, kun nuoriso testasi onneaan. 😄

The Instagram Travel Thursday concentrates this month to traveling near i.e. one's own home area. I noticed that many of my IG photos show sea, so I picked all such to this posting.

We live next to the Inner harbor and usually ice on the sea disappears when I'm not there to see, but this one time I happened to be there while youngsters tested their luck.😄

Pari vuotta sitten sain vielä juostua ja lähes kaikki vakireitit kulkivat meren rantaa pitkin. Tässä osui kohdalle Onkilahden perukassa kunnon heijastus.

Two years ago I was still able to run and most of my running routes were on the sea side. Here I happened to catch a nice reflection on Onkilahti bay.

Ja taas kotinurkille. Kotimme vieressä on Academill, eli Turun yliopiston toimipiste Vaasassa vanhan myllyn tiloissa. Kuva on jäältä kohti entistä junan lastaussiltaa, jossa on nykyään opiskelijayhdistyksen tilat. Ja mukana halo!

And back to my neighborhood. Our home is next to Academill, a university building which used to be a mill. The picture is taken from the sea ice towards bridge used to load trains, nowadays there are student facilities. Plus I caught a halo effect!

Viime kesänä tuli vihdoin 32 Vaasa-vuoden jälkeen käytyä veneretkellä Valassaarilla (tuosta majakasta on oma wikisivunsa). Tuo oli ensimmäinen metallirunkoinen majakka Suomessa ja suunnittelijana sama, joka suunnitteli myöhemmin Eiffel tornin. Pääsy torniin oli suljettu kolme vuotta aiemmin, joten tässä viivyttely kostautui.

Finally after living 32 years in Vaasa I got to visit Valassaaret-island, which is just outside of Vaasa in the archipelago. This lighthouse was the first in Finland with metal frame, and it was designed by the same company which later designed Eiffel tower. The access to the tower was closed for public three years earlier, so I shouldn't had waited that long.

Sani Pass ja pikavisiitti Lesothoon

Palataan hetkeksi meidän viime vuoden aloittaneelle Afrikan kierrokselle. Ringin loppuvaiheessa kurvattiin etelä-rannikon puutarhareitiltä kohti Lesothon nurkkaa, jossa on Johnin Kapkaupungissa meille neuvoma erikoisen upea paikka: Sani Pass (enkku-wiki).

Tuo reitti näkyi sattumalta hiljan Top Gear -ohjelmassakin, jossa mm. Friendsien Joey ajoi sen ylös urheiluautolla.

Let's return for a while to our last year's first trip to southern Africa. At the end of the round trip we left Garden route of southern coast and visited Lesotho and beautiful Sani Pass, of which we got a tip in Cape Town (Thanks John!).

I recently saw the route in a Top Gear episode in which Joey (from Friends) and others drove it with a sports car.

Olimme alueella kolme yötä hostellin privaattimajassa. Ensimmäisenä koko päivänä käytiin kävelyllä paikan lähellä. Yo. kuvassa ollaan lepotauolla ja Tarjan 'edessä' näkyy meidän lähihotelli. Alla oleva maisema näkyi toiselta geokätköltä, kun päivän lopuksi käytiin kiertämässä vuorista kauempana olevaa aluetta autolla.

We spent in the area three nights in private room of Sani Lodge Backpackers. On the first full day we walked near the hotel. Photo above shows our neighbor hotel from the highest point of the hike. The view below was from the second geocache that we found while driving on the area further away from the mountains.

Sani Pass on reitti, jota entisaikoina käytettiin tuomaan karjaa kauppapaikalle Etelä-Afrikan puolelle. Jyrkin nousu näkyy ao. kuvassa takanani - viimeisen kahdeksan kilometrin matkalla reitti nousee kilometrin ylöspäin ja siitä suuri osa tuossa loppuserpentiinissä. Olimme mukana kahden auton päiväretkellä, koska reittiä ei kannata yrittää ilman neliveto-jeeppiä.

Sani Pass is the route which was used formerly to bring cattle to mart in South Africa side. The steepest part is here behind me - during the last eight kilometers it goes one kilometer up. And most of it happens in that last serpentine road. We participated to a two car day excursion, as this route cannot be driven without a 4WD jeep.

Lesothon raja kulkee ylängön reunaa pitkin, eli serpentiinitie ja jyrkin nousu on Etelä Afrikan puolella ja vasta mäen päällä on Lesothon raja-asema.

The border line of Lesotho is on the top of uplands, so the serpentine road and highest rise are on RSA side and just on top of it is the Border Crossing to Lesotho. 

Hauskin bongaus heti rajalla oli ympäriinsä kuljeskelevat Angoravuohet. Ne olivat kuin pirteitä älykkäitä koiria, jotka tutkivat tomerasti kaikkea.

The most cute finding were Angora goats that wondered around everywhere. They were like perky smart dogs, that explored everything.

Lesothon puolella ajettiin vielä n. kymmenen kilometriä eteenpäin ja käytiin 500 metriä korkeammalla, eli korkein kohta retkellä oli 3280 metrissä.

Kiinalaisten tekemä tie näytti hienolta, mutta ylempänä mäessä pintaa vaihdettiin takuutöinä, koska oli jäätyessään ollut kuin luistinrata. Paikalliset moittivat muutenkin suunnitelmia päällystää jyrkimmän rinteen kohta - on erittäin kallista ja tie on kuitenkin vähällä käytöllä.

On Lesotho side we continued about 10 km and visited on the highest point (3280m from sea level), which was about 500 m up from the border.

This Chinese made road looked nice here, but up the hill they were renewing it as warranty work as it had been like a skating rink during cold months. Locals criticized also the plan to put asphalt to serpentine road, as it would be very expensive while there's very little traffic on it. 

Paluumatkalta huipulta vierailtiin ensin pienessä paimenen majassa ja isommassa (alla) kodissa, jossa kuultiin paikallisten elämästä ja maistettiin paikallista olutta ja padassa tehtyä leipää. Leipä oli ihan hyvää ja ostettiinkin sitä.

On our way back we first visited a little shepherd hut and then in a bigger home (below) where we heard of lives of locals. We got to taste local beer and pot bread, the latter was so good that we bought some of it.

Lopuksi vietettiin vähän aikaa Afrikan korkeimmalla olevassa pubissa, josta löytyi yksi geokätkö Lesothoonkin.

At the end we spent some time in the highest pub of Africa. There we got one geocache on Lesotho side too.

Baarin nurkalta löytyi komeat näkymät Sani Pass serpentiinitien kohtaan ja kauempana näkyvään tien tasaisempaan osaan.

From the corner of the bar we found great views to Sani Pass serpentine road and to further continuing 'flatter' part of the road.

Alueelta poislähdön aamuna kävimme läheisellä hotellilla lounaalla ja sitä ennen pelaamassa kuusi reikää golfia (rankkasade oli huuhtonut sillan ja pääsyn kolmelle keskimmäiselle väylälle). Tuolta lähdettiin ajamaan kohti Johannesburgia.

On the last morning we visited the near-by hotel and played six holes of golf (heavy rain had broken the bridge so middle three holes we not reachable). After that we had lunch there and started driving towards Johannesburg.

Pandemic Reign of Cthulhu

Jouluna saadun Catan-pelin seuraksi ostettiin yhteistyöpeli Pandemic Reign of Cthulhu, jossa kaikki pelaajat ovat samalla puolella, miettivät yhdessä mitä tehdään ja mahdollisilla kilpailuhenkisillä on mukavampaa kun kaikki voittaa tai häviää. 😃

Pelissä pyritään sulkemaan neljä toisen ulottuvuuden porttia neljässä kylässä, samalla taistellen kultisteja ja Shoggoth-hirviöitä vastaan. Kullakin pelaajalla on omia erikoiskykyjään ja pelin myötä ilmaantuu lisäapua ominaisuuskorteilla. Pelin voi hävitä viidellä eri tavalla ja voittaa vain yhdellä. Eli haastavaa on!

We got a boardgame Catan for Christmas and now we bought our next game Pandemic Reign of Cthulhu. It's so called co-operative game in which all players are on the same side and either win or lose together. That's a good feature if there's someone taking games too seriously. 😀

The target of the game is to close four gates to another dimension in four villages while removing constantly appearing cultist and Shoggoth monsters. Each player has own special abilities and during the game, there appears some additional help. The game can be lost in five different ways, but win only one way.

Nimessäkin vihjataan, että idea perustuu Pandemic-peliin, jossa samoilla periaatteilla taistellaan eri puolilla maailmaa puhkeaviin tauteihin ja pelaajat ovat terveydenhuoltotiimin jäseniä. Tässä on samaan peli-ideaan otettu ympäristö Cthulhu-mytologian alueelta.

Tuo on tosiaan vaikea peli - itselläni on nyt takana kuusi erää ja kerran on peli voitettu (silloinkin oli muutama sääntö jäänyt huomaamatta, tosin myös itselle edullisia). Yleensä häviö tulee siitä, että näitä pienempiä pahiksi ilmaantuu laudalle nopeammin kuin niitä sääntöjen rajoissa ehtii poistaa.

Tällä kokemuksellakin voin jo suositella Pande-Cthulhua - tämä on ensimmäinen yhteistoimintapelini ja taktiikan pohtiminen porukalla (2-4 hlöä) on hauskaa.

As the name suggests, this is based on Pandemic game, in which players fight together against diseases that appear around the world. Players in it are all members of a medical team. In this game that idea was embedded to Cthulhu mythos.

This (as well are original - I've heard) is quite a difficult game. I've been on six rounds and won just once (and at that time we didn't notice few rules, although also beneficial ones). Usually, we've lost because baddies appear to board faster than we can clear them according to allowed moves.

Even with this quite short experience, I can recommend this game! This is the first co-operative game that I've played and it's really fun to plan tactics together (2-4 players).

Makrotex-haaste: Oranssi

Valokuvauksen kanssa ei ole tullut vähään aikaan leikittyä, joten Pienilintu-blogin Makrotex-haaste oli sopiva kohta kokeilla Hong Kongista tilattuja loittopaloja. Ainoa kotoa löytynyt oranssi tavara oli joltain matkalta mukaan tullut simpukankuori (aika kauan luultavasti, koska ainakaan tällä vuosikymmenellä ei enää olla kannettu tällaisia kotiin 😊 ).

It's quite a long time since I last played with photography and now that Pienilintu blog had a orange as a subject in Makrotex-meme I got to test my latest equipment - extension tube. This is a part of an old shell that we've brought home from one of our trips. It's probably quite old, since we haven't carried stuff home in this decade.

Loittorengas sijoitetaan kameran ja linssin väliin ja sen vaikutuksesta linssin voi tarkentaa paljon lähemmäs kohdetta. Tämän avulla jopa tavallisella linssillä voi saada kuvia lähempää kohdetta. Ostin tämän eBaystä reilulla viidellä eurolla ja noista kolmesta palasta saa yhteensä seitsemän eri kombinaatiota.

Extension tube is added between the camera and the lens. It makes lens further away from sensor and move focus point closer, so even a normal lens can take more close up photos. This package was from eBay (6 USD) and it can be used with seven different distances by using them alone or on any combination.

Takaisin Tahitille | Instagram Travel Thursday

Tällä hetkellä elämä potkii, joten ajattelin valita IGTT-meemiin mielenpiristykseksi jotain paratiisimaista. Näitä samoja kuvia tuli kyllä blogiin jo lokakuussakin, mutta koitan kertoa eri asioita kuin viimeksi.

Maisema alla on Ranskan Polynesian pääsaarelta Tahitilta. Usein turistit ovat pienemmillä saarilla, joista löytyy ne varsinaiset postikorttimaisemat, mutta kyllä tuollakin riitti jyrkkiä vuoria pilvien välissä ja upeita palmurantoja turkoosin meren rannalla. 

At the moment we have a bad situation in our life, so to compensate that I chose something inspiring paradise-like to this travel challenge. I noticed that the same photos had already been in blog, but I'll write something different this time.

The view below is from Tahiti, which is the main island of French Polynesia. Most tourists stay on smaller islands, which offer the most classic post card scenes, but also the main island had steep mountain views with clouds and beautiful palm beaches by turquoise sea.

Me valittiin viikon oleskelun paikaksi pääsaaren länsirannikolta Airbnb-kämppä ja se olikin yks makeimmista meidän majoituksista: (käytännössä) oma uima-allas suoraan olohuoneen edessä ja siitä näkymät 200+ metrin korkeudelta merelle auringonlaskun ja Moorea-saaren suuntaan.

Tahiti on kuin trooppinen Ranska - modernit tiet ja kaupat. Kauppojen valikoima oli Carrefouria ja muutenkin ranskalaista (jopa viinit).

Kävin tekemässä kaksi sukellusta ja varsinkin jälkimmäinen oli hieno, kun käytiin kahden uponneen laivan ja yhden lentokoneen luona.

We chose to stay our week on the west coast of the main island. Our Airbnb place there was one of the best accommodation we've had through that service: we had (in practice) a private pool in front of the living room, with a 200+ meter altitude sea view to sunset / Moorea direction.

Tahiti is like a tropical France - modern roads and shops etc. Carrefour and French wines and other products dominated the selections in shops.

I did a two tank dive and especially the latter one was cool as we visited two ship wrecks and a sunken airplane.  

Moorea on Tahitia lähimpänä oleva pienempi turistisaari ja tehtiin sinne päiväreissu lautalla. Harmittavasti aika loppui kesken, piti kiiruhtaa lautalle ja jäi käymättä se kiinnostavimman kuuloinen lahdelma saaren toiselta puolelta. Seuraavalla kerralla sitten! 😊

Moorea is the closest 'tourist island' to Tahiti and we did a day trip there by ferry. Views were great and it was a pity that we had to hurry back to ferry and couldn't visit a narrow bay behind the island. It's good to leave something for the next visit. 😊

Japanilaisessa kylpylässä

Blogirästien hoidossa on tällä kertaa vuorossa Aasian reissun kylpylävierailu Japanissa. Väsäsin Japanin osiosta tutun tyylisen kartan, joka toivottavasti onkin itseään selittävä, mutta sama pikaisesti: aloitettiin Hong Kongista, sieltä Souliin ja lopuksi Japaniin neljään eri paikkaan.

Kartan numerot ovat oleskelun järjestys ja kulkemiset olivat junalla karttaan piirrettyjä hailuja mustia viivoja pitkin nuolien suuntaan.

Tyttäreni Marianne oli tullut Osakaan jo muutama päivä aiemmin, siitä meidän kans Kiotoon ja toimi aina tarpeen tullen tulkkina.

I'm getting my blogging queue done step by step - this time a spa visit in Japan. First a map of Japan part of the trip: before it we visited Hong Kong and Seoul, then four different places in Japan.

The circled numbers on the map show in which order we stayed there and light black drawn lines show the train route we went to the direction of arrows.

My daughter Marianne arrived to Osaka few days earlier than us, then to Kyoto to meet us and during the trip we could benefit from having a personal translator.

Japanin kolmas kohde oli maan omilla Alpeilla oleva kylpylämajatalo. Tokiosta mentiin luotijunalla saaren poikki pohjoisrannikon kautta Toyamaan. Siellä vaihdettiin paikallisjunaan kohti Takayamaa, josta vielä bussilla Kazeyaan.

Ao. maisema on paikallisjunan matkalta, kun vuoret eivät olleet vielä kovin jyrkkiä.

Third place on our Japan trip was a spa guesthouse in Japanese Alps. We started from Tokyo with a bullet train, went through the island to northern coast and switched in Toyama to local train to Takayama. From there the last part was by bus to Kazeya.

The view below is of the local train when the mountains were not that high yet.

Kazeya löytyi kun reittiä suunnitellessa kuulin Alppien suosituimmasta kohdasta ja etsin sieltä majoituksia. Alueella on kuumia lähteitä lukuisia kylpylöitä varten ja höyryävää vettä virtaa jopa teiden vieressä viemäreihin.

I found Kazeya when I was planning the route, heard about the most popular place in the Alps and searched for accommodation there. There are a lot of hot springs that several spas are using and steaming water is even running by streets to sewer.

Paikka on perinteinen japanilainen kylpylä, huoneita oli vain 15 ja heti aulasta päästiin tunnelmaan, kun kengät vaihdettiin sandaaleihin ja saatiin vihreät teet odottelujuomaksi. Meille esiteltiin majatalon julkiset tilat, neuvottiin privaattikylpyjen käyttö ja ohjattiin omiin huoneisiin, jotka olivat tilavia ja polvia vaativia.

The place is a traditional Japanese spa with just 15 rooms. We got in the right mood already in the lobby when we changed shoes to sandals and got green tea for waiting drink. They showed us the public areas, advised how to use private baths and guided us to our rooms. Those were roomy and knee challenging.

Kylpyjen vesi oli kunnolla kuumaa, mutta varovasti mennen se kyllä onnistui ja raikkaassa ulkoilmassa oli mukava köllötellä kaikessa rauhassa. Ulkoaltaan pohjana oli kananmunan kokoisia pyöreitä kiviä, joten reidetkin saivat hierontaa.

The water in the pools was so hot that it required some settling, but in cool outside breeze it was really nice to relax. The bottom of outside pool was covered with egg size stones, so we got a free thigh massage.

Huoneen hintaan sisältyi aamupala (kuvassa), jossa olikin montaa erilaista makua maisteltavaksi. Illallinen oli ostettavissa erikseen ja otettiin se ensimmäisenä iltana, että näimme millainen se on. Valittavana oli kana-, kala- tai kasvisvaihtoehto ja ruoka oli tosiaan hyvää, mutta ei otettu sitä enää toisina iltoina.

The price of the room included breakfast (picture) and there were many different flavours to taste. Dinner was charged separately and we took it on the first evening to see what it is like. Options were chicken, fish and vegetarian. Food was nice and tasty, but on the next evenings we managed quite well with our lunch and something small for the evening.

Kahden privaattikylvyn lisäksi kylpylässä oli isommat yhteisalueet miehille ja naisille. Miesten puolen pesualue on ao. kuvassa oikealla, vasemmalla oli sisäallas ja takaosan oven takana oli ulkopuoli omine altaineen. Naisten ulkoaltaassa oli kuulemma hauska luolakin!

In addition to two private baths, the spa had common male and female bathing areas. The photo below shows men’s side - washing spots on the right, on the left indoor pool and behind the door is outdoor hot pool. I heard that women’s side had also a nice cave on the outdoor pool.

Ensimmäisenä koko päivänä jatkettiin päätepysäkille samalla bussilla, jolla tultiin hotellille. Sieltä lähti gondoli ylöspäin ja lyhyen matkan jälkeen oli vaihto isompaan gondoliin (kuvassa), joka vei meidät huipulle.

On the first day we continued to the terminus of the bus line that we used to arrive to the hotel. From there a gondola went up to a switch station, from where a bigger gondola (in picture) took us to the top.

Huipulla olikin oikeastaan vain näköalapaikka, matkamuistomyymälä ja ravintola, sekä pieni rinki käveltäväksi. Pidempiin kävelyihin olisi pitänyt varustautua paremmin. Pilvet liikkuivat nopeasti ja upeat näkymät laaksoon ja lumihuippuisille vuorille vaihtuivat moneen kertaan siellä pyöriskellessä.

The top had just a viewing platform, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and a short path for walking. For longer hikes we should had prepared better. Clouds moved fast and great views to snow covered mountains and to valley changed several times during our stay there.

Toisena päivänä Marianne lähti bussilla paluusuuntaan 30min päähän karhupuistoon. Me taas käveltiin lähimpään kylään kiertelemään. Sieltä löytyi sympaattisen näköisiä omakotitaloja (alla), aitoja japanilaisia puutarhoja, hautausmaa, pari ruokakauppaa, hienoja laaksonäkymiä ja pieni temppeli.

On the second day in area Marianne took a 30 minute bus ride to Bear park. We walked to nearest village to look around. There were sympathetic homes (below), real Japanese gardens, cemetery, couple grocery stores, great mountain valley views and a little temple.

Juomavesilähteen vesikipot ja putken suu lähikuvassa kylän temppelin pihassa. Syötiin siellä istuskellen Coopista ostetut ja kaupan mikrossa lämmitetyt valmisruuat.

The mouth and cups of a drinking water fountain that was in the yard of the temple of the village. We ate here ready meals that we bought from the Coop and heated in the microwave oven of the shop.

Meidän paikassamme kylpyläpuoli oli auki joka päivä klo 15-09, eli yölläkin sai kylpeä vapaasti ja päivällä tuo kuusi tuntia oli varattu siivoukselle ja huollolle.

Our guesthouse allowed using spa from 3 p.m. to 9 a.m. so it was possible to path also by night. Six hours during day time was reserved for cleaning and maintenance.

Hotellin henkilöstö oli todella avuliasta, meiltä jäi parikin tavaraa (poikkeuksellista, yleensä ei missään jäänyt) ja soittelivat bussifirmaan + kävivät hakemassa niitä meidän puolestamme.

The staff of the hotel was really helpful - usually we don't forget things behind, but here it happened twice and they exceeded expectations by calling to bus company and fetching things for us.

Bloggauksen 12v-synttärit

Tänään tuli täyteen 12 vuotta bloggaamista - aluksi reilu 10 vuotta vuodatuksessa anonyyminä ja nyt viime vuotisen vuorotteluvapaan lähestyessä vaihdoin 2015 syksyllä bloggeriin omalle nimelle.

Today is the 12th anniversary of my blogging hobby. I blogged first for 10+ years as anonymous in vuodatus (just in Finnish) and as our sabbatical year started I switched to this blogger with my own name during the end of 2015.

Parin vuoden ajan bloggaus oli melko talviunilla, mutta nyt vain aika/viitsiminen on esteenä, kun aiheita ja kuvia riittäisi viime vuoden jäljiltä vaikka kuinka.

Valokuvauksessakin riittäisi kaikenlaista kiinnostavaa kokeilua - sain viime viikolla loittorenkaat (5,5€ sis kotiinkuljetuksen) eBaystä ja voisi taas testailla makrokuvausta. Sen myötä kaivoin vanhoista makroistani synttärisuklaaksi yhden omaa silmää miellyttävän otoksen.

Tekeillä on merkintä japanilaisesta kylpylämajatalosta, joten bloggaus jatkuu. Kiitos lukijoille ja varsinkin kommentoijille! 😊

For couple of years my blogging was almost non-existent but nowadays just time/motivation restricts it as there's countless subjects and photos waiting from last year.

Also in photography there would be a lot of interesting things to test - I got last week extender tubes from eBay and I could test again some macro photography. For this, I searched one of my favourites i.e. the picture above as a birthday chocolate.

I'm currently doing an article about a Japanese spa-guesthouse, so blogging continues. Thanks for my readers and especially to those who comment! 😊

Greenwich ja muuta

Pääsiäisen reissuun meillä oli alunperin lennot Bukarestiin, mutta AirBerlin 👎 perui viikottaisista vuoroistaan neljä ja tietysti meidän päiviltä. Eikä antanut mitään tilalle, vaan odotutti pari vkoa turhaan, minkä aikana vaihtoehdot tietysti vähenivät.

Kohteeksi vaihtui aina monipuolinen Lontoo ja koska normipistepaikkoja ei ollut enää jäljellä, niin hiukan pisteitä lisäämällä mentiin herroiksi bisnesluokassa.

For Easter, we had booked flights to Bucharest, but AirBerlin 👎 canceled four of its weekly flights there and naturally our days. They didn't give any compensation or help but made us wait two futile weeks before telling this and all the time available flights to other places got sold.

So we chose always versatile London instead. And since basic seats with fly miles were not available anymore we added 8k points and flew in business!

Ensimmäisen päivän pääkohteena oli Wicked-musikaali ja yleistä kiertelyä + Buckinghamin palatsin vilkaisu.

Toisena päivänä kierrettiin Kew gardenissa ja samalla tavattiin 19 vuotta sitten viimeksi näkemäni Shannon tyttärensä kanssa. Oheiset kaksi kuvaa ovat Kewstä - yllä palmutalo eli iso kaksikerroksinen kasvihuone. Alla kävelyreitti puiden latvoissa; on luultavasti hienompi kesällä.

The main target on the first day was Wicked musical and some general walking around Leicester square and Buckingham palace.

On the second day, we visited Kew gardens and met Shannon and her daughter. I saw her last time 19 years ago, but facebook has kept us up to date. The photo above is Palm house in Kew gardens - a two story green house. Below is the tree top walkway, which is probably even nicer when the trees turn green.

Kolmannen päivän kohteena oli The Shard, joka oli meille uusi lisä Lontoon muotoihin. Se ehti valmistuttuaan olla kahdeksan kuukautta Euroopan korkein rakennus. Näköalatasanteelta on upeat näkymät, joskin kuvaamiseen on huonoa, että se tehdään lasin läpi.

The Shard was our target for the third day. It was something we hadn't seen earlier in London. It also got to be the tallest building in Europe for eight months after it's completion. The viewing platform gave fabulous views, unfortunately for photography, all shot had to be taken through glass.

Tornilta käveltiin Thamesin rantaa pitkin katsomaan läpi Tate Modern, josta löytyy aina hienoja näyttelyjä. Viime kertaan verrattuna sielläkin oli avattu toinen puoli rakennusta ja sieltä oli tarjolla oma näköalatasanteensa. Alla oleva kuva The Shardista onkin tuolta Tatelta auringonlaskun aikaan.

From the Shard, we walked by river Thames to visit Tate Modern, which always has interesting exhibitions. And now the second building was also open including a nice viewing balcony. The photo below is from there during the sunset.

Neljäntenä päivänä lähdettiin Greenwichiin, joka yhden väitteen mukaan olisi maailman käytetyin kuvaupaikka elokuvissa. Ao. kuva on kuuluisan observatorion vierestä, eli paikassa jonka kautta kulkee nollameridiaani. Joella oli tuona päivänä Tall Ship Race, ja rakennusten välistä näkyykin yhden laivan mastot & purjeet.

On the fourth day, we headed to Greenwich, which is said to be the world's most used location to movies. The view below is from the famous Royal observatory, which set the Prime meridian. There was a Tall Ship Race on that day and one of the ships is partly visible in between the buildings.

Majoitus otettiin taas käteväksi havaitun Earl's Court -aseman vierestä - kahden linjan ansiosta tuosta lähtee kätevästi moneen suuntaan ja Heathrowhun pääsee suoraan metrolla. Tällä kertaa oltiin ahtaita hotellihuoneita tilavammin Airbnbllä, hinta on about sama, mutta meillä oli oma keittiö, makuuhuone, olohuone ja terassi, jossa olisi voinut olla paria minuuttia pidempäänkin, jos ei olisi ollut niin viileä.

We stayed again near Earl's Court station, which is a super handy location: two lines ease daily trips and Piccadilly line takes directly to Heathrow airport. For accommodation we chose Airbnb-place, which was about the same price as tight hotel rooms, but we had own kitchen, bedroom, living room and a terrace, which would have been nice for sitting at evenings hadn't it been so chilly.

Lempimaani Etelä-Afrikka | Instagram Travel Thursday

Tämän kertainen Instagram-matkatorstain aihe on 'lempimaa/alue/paikka' ja niitä riittää useampiakin, mutta juttuun on parempi kun valitsee vain yhden.

Usein jätetään kukin maa yhdelle käynnille, mutta isommat ja monipuolisemmat maat kestävät monta vierailua. Etelä-Afrikka on ehdottomasti niitä monen käynnin kohteita! 

The subject of this month's Instagram Travel Thursday is 'favorite country/region/place'. We have several of those, but for the article it's best to choose one.

Usually we visit each country just once but bigger ones offer sights to several visits. South Africa is definitely one of those that deserve several visits.

Etelä-Afrikan vierailumme alkoi Swazimaan ja Krugerin suunnalla ja vasta kierroksen lopussa (kartta) palasimme Namibiasta lännen puolta Kapkaupunkiin noin viikoksi ja siitä etelärannikkoa Lesothon kautta puikaten Johannesburgiin.

Yllä näkymä Pöytävuorelta kohti keskikaupunkia ja alla näkymä Albert Wharfista takaisin päin.

Our visit in South Africa started in Swaziland / Kruger area and only at the end of out round trip (map) we returned from Namibia on west coast to Cape Town for about a week and from there via south coast Garden route to Johannesburg (with a quick visit to Lesotho).

Above is a view from Table mountain towards the downtown and below a view from Albert Wharf towards the same.

Vaikka tehtiin kahden kuukauden kiertoajelu, niin eteläisessä Afrikassa riittää niin valtavasti nähtävää, että paljon piti ohittaa. Suosittu on esimerkiksi eteläisen rannikon puutarhareitti, jossa käveltävänä mm. ao Tsitsikamman kansallispuiston Storms-joen suu. Reitti kulki upeissa maisemissa ylhäällä kallioiden reunoja pitkin.

Even though we spent two months on our southern Africa round trip, there's so much to see that we had to skip a lot of interesting places. For example Garden route on the south coast has many beautiful places - below is the Storms River mouth in Tsitsikamma national park.

Kapkaupungista lähtiessä käytiin tutustumassa viinialueen tiloihin ja Glen Carlou oli erittäin hieno paikka; laadukas ruoka ja palvelu ja parempi Chardonnaynsa meni Tarjan kaikkien aikojen top3-listalle. 😊 

We visited wine area when we left Cape Town for Garden route and there Glen Carlou had excellent service and food. And their premium Chardonnay went to Tarja's all time top3 list. 😊
