Viikon kuva - Work work

Viikon kuvana näkymä pyörätien sillalta kohti Wärtsilää. Tuolla on tullut käytyä töissä vuodesta -87 eli 33 vuoden ajan joka vuosi.  Kahtena ensimmäisenä vuonna olin töissä vain 6 + 2 kk opiskelun ohessa. Lisäksi kaksi vuotta vuosituhannen vaihteessa kävin töissä vieraalla, mutta silloinkin vietin 50% ajasta täällä.

Tehdas on ollut alueella vuodesta 1894, aluksi Onkilahden Konepajana, jonka Wärtsilä osti 1936. Nyt olen mukana projektissa, jossa alueen toiminnot siirretään noin 3km länteen Vaskiluotoon.

The Photo of the Week shows a view from the bicycle lane's bridge towards Wärtsilä premises. I've been working in that area since -87 so for the last 33 years. During the first two years, I studied and worked only 6 + 2 months. I worked in another company for two years but even then 50% of my time was spent in this area.

The factory has been in that area since 1894. Wärtsilä bought it in 1936 and now I'm working in a project that ends the company's presence here and transfers us about three kilometres West.

Saturday Classics - Games Without Frontiers

Saturday Classics sarjassa palaan niukasti 80-luvun puolelle, eli 1980 helmikuussa julkaistuun Peter Gabrielin kappaleeseen Games Without Frontiers.  

For the Saturday Classics series, we'll return to the beginning of 80s - namely February 1980 when Peter Gabriel published song Games Without Frontiers.

Tämän blogisarjan lisähyötyjä on hyvän musan lisäksi kappaleista vaihtelevasti tuleva taustatieto. Tämä kappale arvostelee sotaa ja maiden keskinäistä käyttäytymistä, joka toi Gabrielille mieleen lasten leikkimisen, että kuka pelaa kenenkin kanssa. Yo. video on ensimmäinen kappaleesta tehty, mutta BBC sensuroi sen ja virallinen video on hiukan erilainen.

Kappale tuli valittua jo pari viikkoa sitten, eikä sanoistakaan oikein löydy mitään keväistä tämän viikon teemaan, joten kevättä etsiville bonuksena kevätlaulu:  😊  (by Tavaramarkkinat)

In addition to good music, this blog meme gives  (sometimes) also interesting background info about songs. This song is '... a commentary on war and international diplomacy being like children's games'. The video above is the original one which the BBC censored for some reason.

This week had again a theme, 'Spring' and Gabriel's song doesn't fit that so below is a bonus song titled 'Spring' from 1985. It's a hit of a Finnish band Tavaramarkkinat ('The Goods market'), which was the first 'girl band' in Finland to record an LP.

Viikon kuva - Tippaleipää

Viime viikolla oli vappu ja kun Tarja ei ollut kiinnostunut, niin ostin itselleni 2 tippaleipää (linkin takana infopläjäys herkun taustoista). Tuo on ollut vappuherkku Suomessa jo 1800-luvulta asti!

Lapsuudessa äidin tekemä oletusherkku oli munkit ja tippaleipiä näkyi vain kaupassa tavoittamattomissa. Joten haave syntyi jo pienenä ja nyt kun saan itse päättää, niin pari pitää vuodessa syödä. 😊 

Last week was 'Vappu' i.e. the First of May, which was before Corona a big festival in Finland. I bought myself two funnel cakes (Tarja doesn't like them) which have been a Vappu-tradition here since the 1800s.

When I was a kid the standard treat my mother did was doughnuts and these I only saw in shops. So now that I can decide I can buy and eat two of those each year. 😊

Saturday Classics - Who's next

Tähän lauantaiklassikkoon otin vuorostaan 70-luvun alkupuolen tuotosta. Itse on tullut kuunneltua The Wholta vain Who Are You -levyä ja tämä tuli vastaan Legion sarjan kohtauksessa, jossa sankari ja pahis olivat matkalla taisteluun. Kappale iski kuin miljoona volttia ja vasta hakemalla sain selville bändin.

For this week's Saturday Classics, I chose a song from the beginning of 70s. My earlier experience of The Who was just of their album Who Are You which I listened a lot when I was young. This song was in a scene of Legion where the hero and the villain are on their way to a fight. The song was amazing and later on, I found the band's name.

Enkkuwikistä löytyi enemmänkin tietoa, mutta perusteet näkyivät jo kappaleen suomiwikissäkin. Kappale syntyi Denverin keikan jälkeen hotellihuoneessa, kun Townsend oli kieltäytynyt fanin houkutuksista. Sen piti alunperin ilmestyä jonkin pahiksen näkökulmasta laulettuna, mutta tuon projektin peruunnuttua olikin vain perinteisesti levyllä.

Tästä näytti olevan kaikkiaan 43 versiota, muita levyttäneitä ovat esim Jon English, Sheryl Crow, Limp Bizkit, Suzanne Vega ja Within Temptation. 

There's a lot of information about this song in Wikipedia. Townsend wrote it after a gig in Denver after he had practised self-control and didn't fall for tempting of a groupie. Originally it was to be published in a musical project as sung by a villain. But as that didn't happen it came normally as part of an LP.

There are 43 different versions of this song, the covers are for example by Jon English, Sheryl Crow, Limp Bizkit, Suzanne Vega and Within Temptation.

Putrajaya / Malesia

Malesian reissusta eKr (= ennen Koronaa) on vielä ehkä puolet käsittelemättä. Nyt on tähditettynä ja julkaistuna viimeisen pätkän kuvat Putrajayasta. Otettiin lennot Borneolle erikseen, joten jätettiin paluuseen varmuusvaraa yksi päivä. Paikaksi valittiin Putrajaya, koska se oli puolta lähempänä kenttää kuin Kuala Lumpur.

Maybe half of the photos of our trip to Malaysia are still waiting but here's one more set. This time I handled pics of our last day which we spent in Putrajaya. Our flights to Borneo were on a different ticket so we took one buffer day to be on the safe side. The location was also handy as it was midway between the airport and Kuala Lumpur.

Yllä näkymä hotelliltamme kohti päämoskeijaa ja taaempana olevaa oikeuspalatsia. Korona näkyi jo tammikuussa, sillä turistien pääsy moskeijaan oli kielletty edellisenä päivänä.

Alla Zenith Putrajaya hotellin ylimmän kerroksen ravintolassa iltapalaksi jaettu pizza ja pimenevä ilta näköaloineen.

The view above was from our hotel towards Putra mosque and the Palace of Justice. Covid-19 affected us already in January as that mosque had been closed for tourists on the previous day.

Below our split pizza for an evening snack at the hotel's top floor restaurant. The view was really nice.

Viimeisen päivän paikaksi oli harkinnassa myös Genting Highlands. Tänne oli kuitenkin paljon lyhyempi lentokentältä, joten otettiin leppoisa viimeinen päivä. Putrajaya on Malesian vuonna 1995 perustettu uusi hallinnollinen keskus. Keskellä on iso tekojärvi ja muutenkin paikka on nykyaikaisen tilava.

We considered also visiting Genting Highlands for the last day but this was much closer to the airport so we chose less stress. Putrajaya was founded in 1995 as a planned city to be the administrative centre of Malaysia. There's a big artificial lake and the whole place is modern and spacious.

Hiukan ylänäkymää Millenium monumentista pikaisesti nostetulla dronella. Tuossa spiraalimaisessa kävelytasanteessa oli seinäminä Malesian historian tapahtumia kohti nykyaikaa etenevinä tauluina.

Ja vielä Millenium monumentti hotelliltamme nähtynä. Iso rakennus takanaan on moskeija ja pallo edessä oli maisemien katselua varten ylös nostettava kaasupallo. Etunurkasta löytyy vielä mäkkärin logo - siellä käytiin iltapäiväkahvilla.

And below the view from our hotel Zenith Putrajaya to the South. Behind Millenium Monument is a big mosque and in front of it is a sightseeing balloon. The McDonalds logo in the bottom left corner shows the place of our afternoon coffee break.

Viikon kuva - peli pystyyn!

Mukuloiden kanssa pidetyt peli-illat on nyt korona-aikana siirtyneet nettiin. Ääni kulkee Discordin kautta ja pelilauta pyörii kätevästi Tabletop Simulatorissa. 

Our game nights with kids have now during corona times moved to the internet. The sound goes via Discord and the board game runs well in Tabletop Simulator.

Tämän illan pääpelinä oli Carcassonne. Meillä oli alussa hyvä tilanne, mutta lopun pisteidenlaskussa jäätiin kolmanneksi. 

This evening's main game was Carcassonne. We had a good start but in the end, our points were enough only for the third place.

Saturday Classics - Toivoa

Lauantai-klassikoissa on tällä kertaa aiheena 'toivo'. Olin jo eilen päätynyt ELOn kappaleeseen samalta vuodelta -79 kuin viime lauantain klassikkoni. Kun näin tämän aiheen, niin mieleeni tuli heti kappale bändiltä, joka lauloi 'liika annos Eaglesia, ELOa ja Abbaa tällaisen raavaan miehenkin jo tappaa'. 😄

The subject for this week's Saturday Classics challenge is 'hope'. Yesterday I planned to use an old ELO song, but for this subject, I chose a Finnish song with lyrics that fit exactly to hope. Sorry that it's sung in Finnish, but you can find google translated lyrics here.

Näinhän täällä käy -kappaleessa parasta on haikeaa toivoa humoristisesti tulviva sanoitus. Kun lisäksi melodiakin on hieno, niin selvää klassikkoainesta! 

The lyrics are IMO great (the translation to English probably loses something) and since also the melody is good, this is clearly a classic!

Kuluva kevät on ollut omituinen ja sattuneesta syytä on oltu paljon kotona, joten ajattelin aloittaa Viikon kuva -sarjan. Valitsen edelliseltä viikolta jonkin kuvan, joka on merkityksellinen tai hieno tai parhaassa tapauksessa molempia.

This Spring has been a weird one and for some reason, we've spent more time at home than usual, so I thought to start a Photo of the Week series. I will choose a photo from the previous week that pretty or meaningful. Or hopefully both!

Takatalvi on tullut nyt muutamaan kertaan - ensin tulee kunnolla lunta ja pian se taas sulaa pois. Tämä näkymä oli kotipihasta viime tiistain aamulta ja viikonloppuna jo taas oli lähes lämmin (tai ei ainakaan kylmä) keväinen ja aurinkoinen sää.

I had to check the word, but apparently 'Blackberry winter' means what we call takatalvi. This winter we've had that, almost no snow until now in April. In Lapland, it's been more snow than normal. This photo was from our window on Tuesday morning and then during the weekend, it was again sunny and just cool.

Saturday Classics - I don't like Mondays

Lisää vaihtelua matkakuviin saa Lauantai-klassikkomeemin kautta. Lepis herätti henkiin vuosien takaisen musanjakoperinteen Saturday Classics -nimellä ja ainakin ensimmäiseen pitää osallistua.

Aloitetaanpa eilisillan mahtavassa Bohemian Rhapsody -leffassa vilahtaneella Bob Geldofilla.

Saturday Classics meme brings something new to this blog in addition to travel photos. Lepis reanimated her old music sharing tradition and I'll participate in at least the first one.

Let's start with Bob Geldof whom I saw also in great Bohemian Rhapsody movie that we watched last night.

Tämä oli Boomtown Rats bändin suurin hitti ja julkaistiin -79. Laulu kertoo Kaliforniassa samana vuotena tapahtuneesta kouluammunnasta, jossa ampuja kertoi syyksi ettei pidä maanantai-päivistä.

Sinä kesänä meille rakennettiin taloon 'elintasosiipeä' ja ärsytin isääni, kun kattopeltien asennuksessa kuuntelivat radiota. Kävin muka salaa laittamassa tätä kappaletta kasetilta soimaan pari kertaa putkeen, kun eivät muuten tuntuneet hoksaavan miten mahtava laulu tuo oli.

Käytin tämän kappaleen Sunnuntaiklassikko-sarjassa blogissani vuonna 2009, mutta kertaushan on opintojen äiti! Samasta kappaleesta olin blogannut myös jo vuonna 2005, jolloin etsin enemmänkin sen taustoja. Ampuja näyttää olevan edelleen vankilassa ja reilun vuoden kuluttua voi taas anoa armahdusta.

This was the biggest hit of Boomtown Rats and it was published in 1979. The song tells about a school shooting that happened in California earlier that year. The shooter told the reason to be that 'I don't like Mondays'.

On that summer some additional rooms were built to our house and I annoyed my father with this song when they were building the roof and listened to the radio. I played this song from the c-cassette a few times in a row as I tried to get them to realize how great the song was.

I did some searching for my blog's history and noticed that I used this song at 2009 for Sunday Classic meme of Lepis. Also, another my blog post talked about this in 2005 so for me this clearly is a classic! The shooter seems to be still in prison and can apply for parole next time in Autumn 2021.

Korona-puuhaa 2

Sain kutsun Facebookin ryhmään Matopelilenkki, jossa on tarkoitus piirtää tracker kuvio lenkistä, jossa ei kosketa aikaisempaan viivaan kertaakaan. Vähän #koronapuuhaa siis.

I got an invitation to a Snake game running group on Facebook. The idea is to draw a track while jogging so that the route never crosses itself. A kind of #coronatime. 

Toteutin tässä samalla jo aiemmin suunnittelemani kuviolenkin. Muutaman yrityksen piti piirrellä Vaasan kartan päällä ennen kuin keksin sopivan kuvan / reitin.

I have earlier planned to run a 'figure route' so this was a kind of two birds with one stone thing. It took a few tries to plan a nice figure/route on top of Vaasa downtown map.

Korona-puuhaa

Tuli harrastettua #koronapuuhaa ja tein tuollaisen pökkää itsesi -videon Karenin ohjeen mukaan. Videon tein täysin iPhonessa, mutta se muuttaminen ikuiseksi giffiksi hoitui ezgif.com sivustolla. Varmaan olisi puhelimeenkin löytynyt softa, mutta tuo oli testattuna valmiiksi.  

I practised some #coronatime and created a #knockyourself video according to instructions of Karen. The video was done completely in the iPhone, but for converting it to a never-ending gif I used ezgif.com site. Surely there's an app for that, but I had already tested that site.

I participated in travel blogger's photo collage project. The text says "We love travelling. The world is intriguing and beautiful. But now it's time to stay at home. Adventures wait." Participants are marked to my instagram post.

Wärtsilällä julkaistiin tänään Covid-19 takia yt-neuvottelut, maksimissaan voi tulla 90 päivää lomautusta. Nyt odotellaan mitä tulee meille ja saako lomautustilanteessa vihdoin valmiiksi viime vuosien valokuvarästejä.

Wärtsilä announced today that due to Covid-19 there will be lay-offs for max 90 days. Now we'll wait and see what we'll get. And if there's forced 'vacation' let's see if I'll finally get all of my remaining photos processed.

Manukan saari

Julkaisin nyt kuvat meidän kolmesta tammikuisesta yöstä Malesiassa Manukan saarella Sutera Sanctuary Lodgesissa. Tilaa oli jäljellä enää Hillside Villaan, mutta olipa sitten yksi meidän hienoimpia yöpymispaikkoja. Näkymä alemman kerroksen terassilta rannalle:

I now published photos of our two days and three nights in January at Manukan island in Malaysia. We stayed in Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. Only Hillside Villas were available and that was one of our finest accommodations ever. A view from the downstairs balcony to the beach:

Saari on osa luonnonsuojelualuetta ja suosittu kohde päiväturisteille, mutta resortin asukkaille oli oma erillinen ranta ja uima-allasalue. Otin heti ensimmäisenä päivänä sukelluksen. Olikin privaattimenoa, kun mukana oli vain opas ja toinen kaveri kuvaamassa meitä.

The island is a part of Nature reserve and a popular destination for day visitors, but resort guests have a separate beach and a pool area. I took a scuba dive already on the first day. The trip was truly a private one as there were only me, my guide and another guy taking photos.

Auringonlasku jäi vähän saaren läntisen pään taakse. Sinne olisi ollut polku, mutta pimeässä kilometrin paluu ei innostanut ja rannaltakin sai ihan hyvän kuvan.

The sunset point was just behind the western end of the island. A path leads there, but returning in dark over 1 km wasn't tempting and the view was quite nice already from our beach.

Illalliselle ilmaantui bändi, joka kävi erikseen jokaisessa pöydässä ja soitti muutaman toivotun kappaleen, Coldplay ei ollut heille tuttu, mutta Beatlesiä ja Love is all around tulivat heti.

During the dinner, a band visited every table and played a few wished songs. They didn't know Coldplay but we got, for example, the Beatles and Love is all around.

Tuohon laiturille tuli pitkin päivää veneitä täynnä kiinalaisia ja malesialaisia turisteja kävelemään julkiselle puolelle pelastusliivit päällään. Huoneistojen privaattiranta oli kuitenkin rauhallinen ja klo 17 lähti pois viimeinen päivävierailujen vene.

Boats bringing day visitors arrived at that pier several times during the day - a lot of Chinese and Malaysian tourists were wandering around the public side with life jackets on. Our private beach was peaceful though and the last boat departed at 17.00.

Vielä näkymä päädymmäisestä huvilasta kohti rantaa ja meidän kämppää. Meillä oli tuo taaimmaisin, joka oli lähimpänä rantaa.

And here one more view of our area towards the beach. Our villa was the rearmost of these, the one closest to the beach.

Makrotex Maaliskuu

Makrotex-haasteen aiheena on maaliskuu ja vaikka yleensä kuukautta on hankala valokuvata, niin tällä kertaa aihe löytyi helposti: vessapaperi. 

The subject for the Makrotex-challenge of this week is 'March'. Normally it would be difficult to take a photo of a month, but this time I got the idea easily: the toilet paper. 

On kyllä täysin poikkeuksellinen maaliskuu verrattuna aikaisempiin. Tammikuun lopussa korona näkyi Malesiassa meille vain kieltona päästä moskeijaan, mutta nyt on koko maailma herännyt siihen. Tämä tulee luultavasti muuttamaan maailmaa enemmän kuin 2001 terrori-iskut. 

This March is totally different from all the previous ones. At the end of January, it just caused us to miss a mosque visit in Malaysia, but now the whole world is affected. This will surely change the world even more than 9/11.
