On Tuesday I visited two standard xc-skiing pause sites that I usually have seen only during Winters. These white 'fur-flowers' are everywhere.

Viime viikolla taas tapahtui, mutta kaikista ei niin ole kuvaa julkaistavaksi. Olin vielä kolme päivää lomalla - tiistaina käytiin Mikon kanssa 30v-synttäriajelulla, keskiviikkoiltana pelasin kerholla kuusi tuntia, torstaina pyöräilin Karpperojärven ympäri samalla kaverin mökkirannan dronekuvaten, lauantaina oli Mikon synttärilounas ja sunnuntaina veljen pojan rippijuhlat.
A lot happened again last week but I don't have many pics to publish. The first three days I was still on vacation - on Tuesday we did a 30th birthday cycling trip with Mikko. On Wednesday evening I played board games for six hours. On Thursday evening I bicycled around the Karppero lake and took drone pics of the shore of a friend's cottage. On Saturday we had a birthday lunch for Mikko and on Sunday my brother's son had confirmation and a party after that.

The point of that colorful drone photo looked like this when I rose to 100 meters (330 ft) and turned it towards the Ylläs mountain. The lake on the right side is the one shown in the first photo of this post.
Tuolla perjantain kävelyllä huomasin yhtäkkiä ainoista kengistäni irronneen koko kantapään pohjimmaiset kumiosat. Siksi ajoin jo seuraavana päivänä Äkäslompolon puolelle. Ensin söin pizzan ja sitten löysin Y1:n sporttikaupan outlet-puolelta 30% alennuksessa olevia Salomon ja Hoka One One -kenkiä. Jälkimmäiset olleet hyviä ja löytyi itselleni sopivat goretex-kävelykengät joten vanhat jäi sinne kaupan roskikseen.
During that Friday hike I suddenly noticed that the sole of my only shoes was severed. Hence I drove to the other side of Ylläs on the next day as there are more shopping options. After a pizza lunch I found an outlet with quality shoes (Salomon and Hoka One One) and got myself great walking and biking shoes. The old ones didn't make it back to the cottage but were recycled already in the shop.
Ennen paluuta kävin vielä katsomassa leirintäalueen rantaa ja nättiä oli. Siellä seinän lämpömittari näytti 30C, joten se muutama kilometri nousua pyörätiellä laittoi kyllä sähköpyörän hintansa arvoiseksi. Y1-ala-asemalla olikin enää 22C mutta tarkeni ihan hyvin. Maisematien toisella puolella 1,5 km pitkässä alamäessä rupesin jarruttamaan, kun nopeus näytti 55 km/h ja vanhan mielikuvitus muistutti miltä tuntuu jos kuuppaankin.
Before heading back I visited the camping site by the Äkäslompolo lake and it surely looked good. The temperature there was 30C (86F) so I really appreciated having an e-bike as next I had to bike a 3 km (2 mi) uphill. There, by the substation of skiing slopes it was only 22C (71F) but still warm enough for me. At the end of the scenery road there was a long downhill part and I used brakes after 55 km/h (32 mph) as I started to imagine how it would feel if I fell. #notyoungandracyanymore
Viime viikko olikin taas keskimääräistä kuvauksellisempi, kun toissa torstaina alkanut Ylläs-viikko jatkui. Valitsin tähän kuvan maanantailta, jolloin ajoin Äkäslompolon puolelta lähtevää huoltotietä huipulle. Tuo kuva ei ihan kerro totuutta tien jyrkkyydestä - välillä en onnistunut lähtemään paikaltani ylämäkeen, kun ensipolkaisu veti tyhjää ja oli pakko heti hypätä maahan. Mutta maisemat oli upeita.
During the last week I photographed again more than usual as the trip to Lapland continued. The photo of the week is from the maintenance road behind the Ylläs. I used this to drive to the top. It's actually much steeper than it shows in the photo. A few times I failed to start bicycling as I had to lean forward and the rear wheel didn't hold for my first pedaling. But the scenery was beautiful.
Tuona päivänä näkyi eniten poroja. Sama tokka pyöri tuolla maisematien pätkällä ja mennen tullen sai pysähtyä hetkeksi autojen kanssa odottamaan niiden etenemistä.
On that day I met most of the reindeers on that trip. This herd was walking in the area so both on my way there and on my return I had to wait for them for a while along with the cars.
Torstaina ajoin hyvissä ajoin Kolariin juna-aseman lähelle ja matkalla tuli pysähdyttyä ekaa kertaa Lapin Kievarissa. Tuosta on ajettu ohi 21 vuotta (yleensä ei aukioloaikana) ja koskaan ei ole tullut pysähdyttyä, varsinkin kun siitä on mökille matkaa enää 21 kilsaa. Nyt se oli ajomatkan puolivälissä ja kävin tauolla. Sain mukavan juttelutuokiomme jälkeen tämän vuoden ekaksi tuntemattomaksi (nro 49) tuolla asuvan Maaretin:
On Thursday I left early to the train station for my return as it was a two hour cycling trip. During these 21 years we have always passed the souvenir-cafe that's near the cottage as it was either too close or already closed. But this time it was convenient as my half trip break. I got a drink & pun and a nice chat with this lady. Her name is Maaret and she agreed to be my first 100 strangers participant (#49) for this year:
Kolarin keskusta oli aika hylätyn oloinen ja 'avoimena' olevassa puukirkossa oli ovet lukossa. Huomasin kartasta rautatien loppumisen kohdalla jännän jokimuodostelman, joten kävin kuvaamassa sen dronella. Tuosta hiirellä raahaamalla näkee 360-kuvan joka suuntaan. Sadepilvi oli oikeasti paljon tummempi ja paukutti ukkosta.
The downtown of Kolari looked almost abandoned and the old wood church that was supposed to be open was locked. I then noticed that the last part of the rail road is surrounded by an exciting river formation so I went there to shoot it with my drone. If you drag this picture below with your mouse you can see the 360-photo of the area. That rain cloud was much darker in reality.

Torstaina aamusta saavuin yöjunalla Kolariin ja aamupalan jälkeen lähdin polkemaan Ylläsjärvelle. Nyt on riittänyt aurinkoisia päiviä, tosin sadetta on luvassa sille päivälle, kun pitää polkea takaisin. Eilisen ohjelmana menin järven takaa pikkupolkua ja matkalla näkyi hieno heijastus Kielisenvuoman vesissä:
On Thursday morning I arrived at Kolari by night train and bicycled to Ylläsjärvi after a morning snack. So far every day has been very sunny, though it seems that the rainy days are when I need to ride back to the train on next Thursday. Yesterday I rode a smaller path behind the lake and saw this nice reflection in the Kielisenvuoma swamp:

During my walk I listened to this song six times in a row. The band is Elokuu (translates to 'August' in English) and the song Saatilla (about as 'Accompanying' i.e. walking with a date). Lyrics translated to English tell a bit even though some words were not translated at all.
Viimeksi tuolla käydessä (2015) satoi paluumatkalla ja kun marssittiin alla näkyviä pitkospuita sadeviittojen alla niin laitoin tuon kappaleen soimaan kännykän kaiuttimesta. Tarja muisteli monesti miten mukava hetki se oli, vaikka satoikin. Sanoissa löytyykin monta sopivaa sanaa: pitkospuut, taluttaa, saatilla, käpertyä kainaloon. ❤️
On our last visit here in 2015 it started to rain during our walk back to the car. We marched on the path below under our rain ponchos and I played this song on the speaker of my phone. Tarja has mentioned several times how nice that moment was even though it was raining. The lyrics are really nice, telling about walking together, Summer nights and hugging. ❤️

Kuusi vuotta sitten (27.7.2015) tuo kyltti oli selvästi pirteämpi. Paljon on tapahtunut sen jälkeen - tuolloin aloiteltiin ensimmäisiä suunnitteluja vuoden 2016 vuorotteluvapaalle ja kuviteltiin kaiken jatkuvan normaalisti.
Six years ago (27.7.2015) the sign was much nicer. A lot has happened since then. Back then we were doing our first plans for our 2016 sabbatical year and thought that everything will continue as it was.

Last week started with two evenings of board games and then the main thing was the long weekend, Midsummer, which is one of the most important holidays for Finns. Tarja and I have spent the eve with our friends for many years and now it was just me. A really nice evening again - and five kids to make sure it's also vivid. Thanks again Pirjo and Seppo! 🌹
Ilta meni pelatessa pitkään ja yöunet jäivät 4,5 tuntiin. Otin lauantain lepäillen ja kun sunnuntain unet onnistuivat, niin aamujuoksun jälkeen pyöräilin pojan kanssa Merikaartoon lainaamaan kyläseuran venettä. Mainio idea tuo puhelimella lainattava soutuvene (soittamalla sai koodin kaapin numerolukkoon). 👍🏻
We played quite late (or early) so my next night was just 4,5 hrs of sleep. Hence I took Saturday slowly. The next night went again well so on Sunday I first did some jogging and then we bicycled with my son to borrow a rowing boat from a village association. A boat to borrow by calling the number code is a nice idea. 👍🏻

Viime perjantaina oli meidän osaston tyky-päivänä pitkästä aikaa toisten ihmisten näkemistä. Tietysti turvallisesti ulkona harrastaen samoin kuin lounas. En ollut aiemmin kokeillut näitä Zip-puistoja, mutta oli se roikkuminen kyllä ihan kunnon liikuntaa mun voimille. Menin kaikki radat läpi (paitsi lastenrata) ja muutama ihan jännä pitkä liuku ja hyppykin oli.
Last Friday our department had an activity-afternoon and I saw several people 'live' instead of 0-3. The activity was Zip-adventure park along with a lunch outside. This was my first Zip park and it surely was a real workout for my current strength level. I passed all the routes (except #1 which was for children) and there were a few really nice long slides and jumps.

The photo of the week is from my visit to the polling booth. My first election as a candidate was a really interesting experience. I had to think more about politics and the online-party meeting in November about our program was interesting too. I got 44 votes which was much more than I expected (in another party three got to reserve reps with less votes than that). Big thanks to everybody who gave their vote to me! 🙏🏼 ❤️

On Thursday there was perfect weather to see the partial eclipse of the Sun. I had meetings for the whole day but the camera was waiting on the tripod with the right settings, so when my calendar reminded me it was quick to shoot it from the balcony.
Sunnuntaina saatiin vaalien kunniaksi mahtava lounas anopin luona ja pelattiin pari erää Second Chancea, minkä jälkeen pidempänä pelinä Mysterium. Pelistä hiukan enemmän täällä.
On Sunday we got a tasty election lunch from my mother-in-law. After that two quick rounds of Second Chance and then a longer game of Mysterium. A bit of that game here.

This Saturday's classic is a rare case of songs that also Tarja liked permanently. Viva La Vida by Coldplay hit us both right away when it was published.

I have a sad memory regarding this second version sung by Fork. In Spring 2017 we were in the front row of Fork's concert in Pietarsaari. Earlier that same day we got the confirmation of Tarja's first cancer. So the mood was sad and she really waited for this song since they had always played it as the last one. But this time it didn't come at all. After the concert when the singers were in the lobby Tarja mentioned to the singer in her direct way about missing the song. The singer Kasper was even her favorite Fork member but he didn't seem very pleased as he surely expected something else than complaints. So Kasper, if you happen to read this someday, please notice that this was not your average complaint but there was a really sad mood and a collapsed anticipation behind it. Otherwise we liked the concert and I played the song in the car on our way home, but naturally it wasn't the same...

Ajoin tuon ohi paluumatkalla tämän vuosituhannen pisimmällä pyöräilylläni (102km - reitti). Kesällä -85 pyöräiltiin kahdessa päivässä Oulusta Kokkolaan valalle ja siitä tuli vähän reilut 100km päivälle. Nyt kävin yo-juhlilla ja keksin hyödyntää ohjelman persekestävyyden treenaamiseen kesää varten. Oli aika hutera olo kotona illalla, onneksi ei muuta - jatkossa enemmän taukoja ja kunnolla juomista.
I drove by that on the return trip of my longest cycling trip of this millenium ( 102km / 63,5mi - route). During the Summer -85 I did twice 100km on two days as our army time trip to our oath swearing happening. Now I got an invitation to a graduation party and decided to use it as an ass training for my plan of long Summer cycling trips. I was pretty tired at home but fortunately, there were no other side effects. Will need to pause and drink more on my upcoming trips.

Viime keskiviikkona kävin jo toisen kerran pelaamassa paikallisessa lautapelikerhossa. Nyt tuli 5,5h täyttä asiaa. Nopeasti meni aika, kun oli uusien pelien kanssa pallo hukassa. Tässä olin hämmentynyt Concordian äärellä.

Last Wednesday I visited for the second time at the local board game club's game night. Now I got 5,5 hrs of strict action. Time really flew as I was trying to understand new games. Here I was confused with Concordia.

Let's get back to Saturday classics after my blog post yesterday as a candidate of the upcoming local election. Thomas Dolby was a forerunner of Synthpop in new wave music in the 80's. He created a few songs that I liked a lot. The best in my opinion is this Europa and the Pirate Twins:

Thomas on oikealta sukunimeltään Robertson ja on syntynyt Kairossa 1958. Perusti musisoinnin jälkeen piilaaksoon firman ja heidän tekniikkaansa on käytetty mm sen klassisen Nokian soittoäänen tekemisessä.
Lisämaininta: unohtui tästä, että isällä olisi ollut tänä päivänä 85-vuti synttärit. (= ei ole kirjoitusvirhe, oli viisivuotiaana kuulemma kirjoittanut ikänsä, että '5 vuti'. Mä en vielä tuon ikäisenä kirjoitellut mitään lukukelpoista...)
His biggest hit is probably Hyperactive! which has a fun video. Another song in my Dolby's Top 3 is Flying North - a nice melodic song.
Thomas was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1958 and his real last name is Robertson. He later started a successful business in the Silicon Valley and their technique is used for example in creating that classic Nokia tune.
